7800gt weak performance?

Thread Starter
Greets!

So I ran out and got Oblivion - insane game, highly recommended if you're an rpg fan - and it smokes... indoors I get like 65-75 fps.

Outdoors, though, where it's really testing your system, I average about 27-30fps. Do you think a gap like that normal for Ob?

I'm well aware that my eVGA 7800gt isn't OC-able - I've tried and can't get much of anything out of it over stock w/out lockups - but I also would think it should be able to handle Oblivion better. I'm running Ob @ 1280x, bloom (can't do HDR, gotta have my AA), AAx4, large textures, grass/tree/self shadows off, and have even had to handicap my tree/geography/buildings draw distance just to keep my fps around 27-30.

Please, please, someone tell me I'm missing some vitally stupid setting that allows me to get 35-40 fps consistently...

Wow. You really ought to be getting better than that with those settings like that. I do not have the game so I can not give you specifics but it seems a little weak. I have seen people posting here with 7800's getting better FPS with high settings.

You really can not OC your eVGA? Wow that sucks. What are the stock clocks? Is it the 470/1100? That might be that chips max? Strange I can get 500/1200 on mine with no artifacts but I have a different brand. It just seems most of the 7800's are getting at least 480/1150 or so.

Oblivion will tax your entire system. The good thing is that soon you will be able to purchase a PPU (Physics Processing Unit), install it into a PCI slot and the problem will be over.

Well would 300 be better spent on another 7800gt, new CPU?, awsome ram or the ppu?

if you're gonna spend 300 dollars you should just get a 7900gt, that would do nicely on oblivion

There must be something wrong with your drivers. I get better then that in those settings with my x800xl. My CPU is OC'd to 2.6 right now.

Oh yes that reminds me did you get the latest nVidia drivers? They are supposed to have made some tweaks to help with this game. Worth a try if you have not. The version is 84.21 release on 03/17/2006 and here is the link.

Having same troubles with my 7800GT as well... had to do a lot of tweaking (.ini file changes as well as different other stuff that was supposed to help out a bit), yet nothing has really worked so far.. I think it's acceptabel right now, but it seems to me, that others have done way better with their 7800GT.. mine's OC'ed to 477/1.15, I have 4xAA, Grass distance is about halfway up, and view distance is almost all the way, no LOD though, and I have no bloom as my changes to .ini have made that pretty much unusable. It's 1280 x 1024 and textures are at high. Outside my FPS is going from 20 to 60, mostly lying about 30 - doesn't that seem a little bit low?

I have noticed lately though, that my 3dMark05 score has fallen dramatically (only squeezed it up to 7000 with the OC - my old record was 8300!). Do you think it might just be something that lies on my computer, so a format might be a wise decision?
