7800gt weak performance? - Page 2

Thanks for the replies... you've given me hope!

Stock clocks for the eVGA 7800gt are 470/1100 and @ 488/1118 I get occasional artifacts and hard lockups. :| The eVGA 7800s are known for their weak OC abilities.

I got the 84.25 drivers the day they came out and it did seem to improve performance - didn't have a framerate sample prior... maybe I should try the 84.21?

I haven't touched my cpu clock, but I'm considering it... that would help some? I'd think, though, that even with stock I'd be doing better.

Another gig of RAM wouldn't hurt, I'm sure... but c'mon now - I didn't pay almost $300 for 27fps. :|

Could not hurt to try the 84.21 drivers as the ones you have are beta.

That is a shame about the eVGA cards as everyone thinks so highly of them. I would think your CPU speed is good as well and YES another GB of RAM would most certainly help. Made an improvement here when I added one. Hell in BF2 I am in the game so quick I can almost get a flag capped before most people get in.

My system smokes BF2 as well, which has made me very, very happy. : )

Wow, look at the ignorance in this 7800gt suggestion...

afaik, no gpus can do HDR and AA except the x1800/x1900s, but here's this guy recommending forced HDR/16xAA? XD

Well having a great video card isnt all maybe you need a better CPU to get highest graphics? I think yours is very close from the "recommended" setting like mine. Test it here to know http://www.srtest.com/referrer/srtest

Mother****er.

While I was troubleshooting, I found this thread:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=66785

in which, some people said that uninstalling FFDSHOW/DEFILER PACK increased performance. So I did that... and now have a SOLID 37-40fps!!!

I'm SO relieved
; I was convinced my **** was teh broken!

Outdoors, though, where it's really testing your system, I average about 27-30fps. Do you think a gap like that normal for Ob?

I'm well aware that my eVGA 7800gt isn't OC-able - I've tried and can't get much of anything out of it over stock w/out lockups - but I also would think it should be able to handle Oblivion better. I'm running Ob @ 1280x, bloom (can't do HDR, gotta have my AA), AAx4, large textures, grass/tree/self shadows off, and have even had to handicap my tree/geography/buildings draw distance just to keep my fps around 27-30.

Please, please, someone tell me I'm missing some vitally stupid setting that allows me to get 35-40 fps consistently...

I know there has been a lot of issues playing this game to the max. I mean 4xAA, bloom effect and all the sliding bars to the right. I know this might sound crazy I think I found a way. I was messing with RivaTuner did some tweaks. I put the game on max now I just fly over the grassy field with no hitch.

But anyways I’d used RivaTuner

...and after all that tweaking, you're running @ max/max - nice!

Have you checked your framerate? What about before? (tdt in the console, or go DL fraps)

I have no problem using RivaTuner if it's going to increase my fps...

It is said that the game will not take advantage of a PPU (and Bethsoft dosn't plan on patching the game to use one ), so it may just be a waste of money, seeing as the PPU may do nothing for Oblivion.

No, it's a 3rd party codec pack you can download to help with media player's weak a55 codec support... it helps play all, but apparently not Oblivion.

If you had it installed, you'd know.
