I want to mod my Dell

Thread Starter
Ok, I have a Dell Dimension 4700. It's one year old, and I only had a 1 year warranty. I want to upgrade some hardware, as well as mod the case. I have some questions, and I found this forum and I can see it's not just another noob forum so I'm asking here.

First off, here are my specs (only ones required for this mod):

P4 HT 3.0GHz
512 MB RAM - 400MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
80 GB Serial ATA HD
Integrated sound
128 MB PCI Express x16 Radeon x300 SE

I'm not gonna upgrade my CPU, but I'm thinking about its cooling.

http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/7741/21jy.jpg

As you can see, it has a heatsink (ofcourse). If I get liquid cooling, will I have to take off the heatsink and install the liquid cooling instead of the heatsink?

My RAM - I'm planning to get an additional 1 gig for $70 - is it gona be crap cuz it's cheap?

My HD - always full so I have to keep burning my data onto discs, I have more than 70 discs with programs and **** now.. I want to get a 2nd HD that's 300 gigs. Or I'm thinking of getting a 74 gig 10,000 RPM. Is the RPM a big factor in performance?

Sound - I plan on getting a SoundBlaster for around $30

GFX card - Is it possible to buy another identical card and link them like you can link with nVidia SLi?

http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/7886/35eo.jpg

If not, I might get a better card, as this one kinda sucks nowadays. It's hella good for the value though. Runs BF2 @ medium quality with 2x antialiasing. I want full quality though.

And now for the case.

This damn Dell case is ugly. I want a cool one, but I can't buy another one and mount all my hardware into it, as Dell cases aren't ATX compliant. Gah. So, I wanna mod it.

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/6151/53dq.jpg

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/6262/67xx.jpg

That's the side I'm gona mod. (like there is any other side to mod..). What I want to do is either:

Cut out the Dell logo and put glass or hard plastic or a net
Install a fan or two
Drill more vent holes

OR

Replace the whole side with glass or hard plastic
Install 2 fans
Drill vent holes

If I do either, where can I get glass or hard, see-thru plastic that's easy to cut, and what would I use to cut it?

I want to do some stuff to the front:

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/6452/48kf.jpg

I don't think it would be smart to put a fan there do you? I am gona put some neon there, though. But for the empty drive slot - can I get 2 mini fans that will fit there?

2 more things:
should I get a new power supply? I don't know the wattage of this one.
Liquid cooling - should I get it?

And that's all. Long post, thanks if you read all of it, I really want to do this mod. I have a small budget, and I'd really appreciate if anyone knew some links to cheap but good parts that I want. I don't want to spend more than $500 on this, and currently I have $100 to spend. I have no tools (at least I think I don't) for cutting glass.

Thx!

1. There is no way possible you can get SLI on that board. PCI and PCI-e slots are completely different.

2. Go with the 1GB of RAM, I just found some Corsair 1GB (5x512mb) for $69-ish at Zipzoopfly.com

3. For making the holes in the side, I'd recommend using a hole saw, then mesh the hole. I got my computer running SUPER cool by making a hole in the side, then drilling out holes through the plastic. (Mine's a dell too)

4. The liquid cooling may or may not work. You'd have to take out the heatsink then see how the mounting bracket is held on. The bracket on mine is held on by 4 nylon rivet things and stuck onto the mobo tray.

That's about all my advice that I can give. Hope I helped.

Ok liquid cooling is a bit more pricey than I thought, that's off. SLI's off. I found some RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820223052 do you think it will work with my dell? I asked on Dell support forums and all they tell you is to buy either Dell brand or from an affiliated company.. I dont know if they're lying or their damn mobos only accept their ram.. And as for the hole, my case is metal. or aluminum.

Ok You have a hundred, Buy a good used Mobo from somebody on here and spend the rest on a case( get one with a PSU to get you going), You will have to get a good copy of XP so save another 100, buy those three things, then you will have a good starting point. But go ahead and cut away at that case it will be good practice.

Thats a really good idea. The only thing making this comp a Dell is the board. I can get another one, then I'll be able to overclock and stuff? If yes then ok, but it's gonna be damn hard finding a mobo that will be compatible with all the dell components..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121014 - is this a 100% compatible board?

Here are my full specs:

Pentium 4 Processor 530 with HT Technology 3.00GHz, 800 FSB
512MB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz (2x256MB)
128MB PCI Express x16 ATI Radeon X300 SE
80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
16x DVD-ROM Drive

And it should have space for RAM, GFX, HD, and sound upgrades. I already have a dvd burner, but it's external so it doesn't matter.

Well the drives are OK I think anfd the CPU, but they do their own thing with power supplies I've read. Maybe I am wrong about thier drives and they are proprietary too? Anyone?
