ATI X1900 XTX 512mb?? - Page 3

I use this card. It's perfet in every game, including FEAR, Call of Duty2. I think if right now you are still using 9800 and have plan to upgrade. It's a very good choice.

You know what? Just buy the 1800xl because

1) It overclocks vey well and most people are getting between 9000 and 11000 on 3dmark 05.
2) It supports sm3.0b and dx9.0c
3) The advent of dx10 comming out soon (jaunuary) will render all current cards obsolete
4) The x1800 will gobble up anything you throw at it, even Oblivion

You may as well wait until cards come out that support dx10. IMO buying a 1900xtx or any card above an x1800 is not necessary because dx10 is much better and NOT backwards compatible, nor are current dx9 cards compatible with dx10 (that includes the x1900xtx). So by the time games are designed to make full use of the x1900xtx's power, dx10 cards will be out and just as expensive as an x1900xtx right now.

DX10 is not backwards compatible in the sense that it cannot run DX9 games without software emulation. DX10 will not render DX9 obsolete, just as SM 3.0 did not render SM 2.0 cards obsolete, though it did make them somewhat less desirable. The biggest part of DX10 will be the unified shaders, in terms of graphics, DX9 cards will be able to run any and all DX10 games. And most SM 4.0 features are supported in SM 3.0, so youre not missing too much.

The X1900 is a beast and its 48 shaders will be able to handle any DX10 game without much trouble. Im glad I got mine. Well worth it.

Microsoft now says consumers wont get a hold of vista until at least january of 2007, so that could be a long time to wait for dx10 cards. For the guy who spoke about getting the x1800xl, wasn't that whole 1800 series kind of a dud since it came out after the 7800 but were still poorer? (except for the costly x1800xt). Like somebody mentioned, get the 1900 with 48 shaders and 16 pipes or wait until Nvidia releases a newer dx9 card

Im just saying that you don;t need thatmuch power for today's games. All you need is an 1800 256mb card and 1gig of system ram. Anything more than that is overkill and by the time games actually need the power of a 1900 dx10 cards will be out that are more powerful than the x1900 and are compatible with future versions of dx10.

So you have 2 choices:

1) buy a 1900 now for ~600$ and get full use of sm3.0, dx9.0c, etc.... for one year and then watch everyone buy a dx10 card and tell you how much dx10 makes dx9.0c look old.
2) wait one year and buy a dx10 card that will provide you more than a year's worth of compatibility.

Ultimately in the end, you may have a hard time selling the 1900 too because everyone will want a dx10 card, so the possibility of buying it now and reselling it is moot.

1 year is a looong ways away. So basically your going to be left in the dust for a year. Thats what I figured. And you can get an x1900XT for $440, and flash it to an XTX without problems (like flashing an x850 XT to XTPE). I say go for an x1900XT/XTX now, and dont worry about DX10 yet.
Anywhom. I plan on upgrading my card next March after SKT M2 comes out.
