Are you overclocked? Becuase if you are, that sounds like an instability issue.

If all else fails you can reinstall Ie6.

Personally, check out Firefox if you want some easy browsing.

Make sure all your flash / shockwave / java / etc and security settings are proper as well. There is some scripting i read about that will lock you up if you dont have proper settings / security with ie6. The other option is you have maleware present and that can also affect ie6.

make sure your security is all up to date and active..

what you need for everyday internet use is a good firewall (either software or router) and up to date antivirus.

I'd recommend browsing with firefox too.....not only for the tabbed browsing but also I like the popup blocker.

only times I see machines locking up when on the net is when they are doing it unsecurely and keep getting trojans when they access crack or porn sites....which I'm sure you are not

Try and re-evaluate you overclock if you have one and check that you have the latest IE6 updates and make sure you have all the appropriate software such as Java runtime and Macromedia player and such. If all fails totally re-install ie6
