PS1 games running on PS2

I was under the understanding that PS1 games would run on the PS2, but the other day I tried running THPS 2 on my PS2, but it just booted to the BIOS sceen with the options for browser and such. The disk is very scratched, so could this be the problem? I would have thought it would at least load the game then crash, if that were the case.

The ps2 normally boots to the setup screen when there is either no cd in the drive or when it doesnt detect it because its either too badly scratched OR it from a different country.

Similar to the stupid problem about usual dvd players (say region 2) not being able to play disks from other regions; the ps2 has the same sorta feature.

If your ps2 is PAL, you will be ableto play only PAL games,
If your ps2 is NTSC, you will be ableto play only NTSC games,

(there is also this other one, but i cant remember it )

The only way you will be able to play imported games are if your ps2 is either chipped, or if you have some sort of modchip/disk that allows you to play those games

All my stuff is from the US of A, so thats ok. I guess it must be the scratchs. It looks like I took sandpaper to it, lol.

Yep, it's probably the scratches. My PS2 boots PS1 games just fine, but has trouble with either format if the disc is smudged, much less scratched.

If the CD is very scratched, it is possible for that to happen.

I have a younger brother, I've experienced that a lot. Sometimes it'll come up with Please insert a Playstation Game or something like that, other times it'll just go to the browser.
