What is the difference between a logical drive and a primary partition?

Hey all, i just configured my first raid array ever, and its running great...

I short stroked it and created these primary partitions:
C:\\ windows drive (60gb)
D:\\ games drive (240gb)
Windows also created a 100mb system reserved primary partition
1600gb free space unallocated

I went into the windows 7 disk manager and I am creating another 200gb partition for music/movies, but its making it a logical drive instead of a primary partition (i read online that windows can only have 3 primary partitions, so it makes sense)

But whats the difference? What does it mean that its a logical drive? It is still on the same array as the others?

Also, if I create an image of my current array, to ues to restore if one of these drives ever fails, will it take that logical drive into account in the image?

Thanks, im a n00b when it comes to this stuff

As far as making the backup!
When you do it, you choose what drives you want to backup

Logical volumes are the same as regular partitions, with one caveat. They can't technically be booted from. A primary partition has to be booted from.

But in reality, there's a trivial workaround to this. The boot files on that 100MB partition boot first, and then some low level stuff detects the logical volumes and allows booting from them.

Every other OS/tool has long since added support for logical volumes, so it's highly unlikely you'll ever encounter anything that can't see it.

just an old limitation with a workaround

since you can only have 4 primary partitions, then when you make a 4th partition, windows makes it a logical drive within the last primary partition, so if you want to make a 5th or 6th then you can put those inside the 4th primary partition as well...

The only thing is if you decide to edit the partitions later on, sometimes Window's Disk Management can get confused... I've seen it posted on the forums, not experienced it myself...

Then again, I usually just wipe out the disk if I'm going to completely repartition it, and restore data from another drive...
