Windows start screen issue

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I've been around the worlds overclocking forums and haven't yet been able to pin point the problem I'm having; hoping someone out there can help!

I'm overcloking a 3800X2 (one of the earlier chips I think). I had it up to 2.4 (from 2) with a Vcore of 1.5 (I'm watercooling so temps never go above 55C on full load). I ran 2 instances of Prime 95 (one on each core) for 13 or so hours with no stability problems.

However, every so often when I boot up the windows start up screen doesn't get past the bit where the blue bar scrolls across the screen- the bar keeps going and going but it never gets anywehre.

It's intermittent, probably around 1 in 4 boots.

Is this purely a case of my overclock being too high or are there further tweaks (not that I can think of any) that will resolve the problem?

Cheers,

Chris

BTW my rig's as follows:

3800X2 @ 2.4 (240 x 10) HTT @ 3X
AN8 Ultra
1024MB Corasir 4400C25
X800XL
Hitachi 250GB HDD

The mem voltage is 2.9, the top end of the manf sepc. My mems guaranteed to run at 275mh by corasir. The only thing I haven't toyed with whilst OCing is the mem timings- left them on 'auto' (changed em once to by SPD, but it had no effect on the problem).

The VTT is exaclty half of the 2.9 (not sure there's any benefit in playing with this anyway?).

Thanks for the swift reply btw mate!

Can anyone else throw any suggestions in?

Like I saaid, my rigs rock solid on all benchmarks- this is the only undesirable thing that happens when overclocking... and I'd like to sort it!

Cheers

Does the problem go away when you run everything at stock speeds? If so, then you now it's the overclock that's doing it.

Edit: I had a similar problem once. The computer would either hang right after the initial boot sequence or get stuck on the Windows boot screen until I restarted. It turned out to be the SW IDE drivers from nvidia. Uninstalled them and the problem went away. Post your system specs. under User CP.

check your hard disk for bad sectors. At the Windows XP command console, type:

chkdsk -f

then reboot and it should check the disk before it boots into the GUI.

If you installed the nvidia IDE drivers, it'll cause this problem. Other forum members have had this problem, I had a problem w/ the IDE drivers as well, however mine were very minor, it would hang @ the Win logo screen for about 10-15 secs, now that the drivers are gone, it stays there for one-two scrolls. Other memebers have had it stay at the win logo screen for 10 or more minutes.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The one about the SW drivers was paticularly interesting- have uninstalled them and no probs so far! Will keep you all posted.

My instinct was that it was something relating to the HDD as other than this intermittent problem the systems 100% rock solid.

Hopefully this will have sorted it *rubs hand* 2.5 here we come...
