Oh I'm coming back!! I will have two rigs running gtx 980''s soon! I had some cooler issues.. 1st one was DOA 😞

The Brass Bottom Boys have a spot for you but you will have to prove stability. The TC has requirements and you can't sit out for a month or two, that is what makes it different from general OCN folding.

I got a Corsair H55 and NZXT G10 to slap onto the GTX 970, I thought it looked silly, especially since because of how the PCB on the Zotac 970 was laid out, the fan pointed at nothing. So then I considered just using zip-ties like I did a while back with a R9 290 when they first came out and the G10 didn't exist. But then I said fk it and carved up the little bracket with a dremel. I thought I could modify the fan portion of the bracket and mount it to the expansion slots so it would blow on the VRMs but it didn't work out. So right now I have a fan ziptied in place pointing at the VRM heatsink.

It's a little ghetto but I kinda like it. But the main thing is that the performance increased. So it wasn't a total waste of ~$80. Before my 970 was doing 1425MHz @ 66C-70C, now I'm running at 1500MHz @ 40C-44C. I might have some more headroom for overclocking. I'll mess around with it some more. Right now I'm 98% on a P13500 so I don't want to mess that up.

EDIT: Well I just played Far Cry 4 for about an hour at 1540MHz, so I'm going to try folding at this frequency and see what happens I guess. This is nuts!

I do have a problem though, when I fold with this card the GPU memory clocks stay at 1500MHz but I run it at 2000MHz doing everything else. IDK how to get it out of 2D clocks while it's folding. None of my other GPUs do this.

That has to be one of those short single fan Zotac cards.

It's a dual fan. Super short PCB, I guess most 970's are. When they were released there wasn't really a "reference PCB", then later on people started putting them on 980 PCBs. This was an early one. It had a little separate VRM heatsink, but the VRAM was cooled by the air cooler, so I might need to get some little heatsinks for the ICs. It's still running with the VRAM overclocked with no issues. But I might do it anyway just for good measure.

With EVGA the GTX 970 blower PCB was short, The ACX 2.0 got longer and ACX 2.0+ was the same size as the GTX 980.

Well I think I got all my hardware dialed in. The GTX 970 is doing just fine at 1540MHz, folds super stable. It crashed gaming at 1550MHz but not folding. But since I only get to check it first thing in the morning before work and at night I just want it to be stable so I won't press it too much more. Is 1540MHz good for a 970? I've always used lower end hardware (MSRP sub $200). Speaking of lower end hardware. The GTX 950 is dialed in pretty well too. 1532MHz is the max I can get out of it without getting occasional bad state detected errors in the log file. At that frequency I'll have to rely on luck to top the category. Kind of annoys me that a high bin GPU like the FTW I have hardly overclocks. Then I get this Zotac GTX 970 basic model card and I'm +260MHz over stock clocks and my FTW can't break +60MHz. Oh well, I'm glad I put an AIO watercooler on this 970, it works great.

@King Who Dat - You still having internet issues? You haven't put up any points recently. Are you having second thoughts about Team Competition or is it just bad luck?

1540 is a very nice folding OC.  Just glancing through the 970 Owners Club that is in the top 10% of the GPUs that are listed in the OP, and higher than all but one of the 970s in the PPD Database. :thumb:

Well that's good to know. I don't think it will get me competing with the 980's but it's something!

I didn't realize we busted into the top 4 of TC. If I had the 970 running at the beginning of the month it wouldn't put us any higher but we would have some cushion between us and 5th place.

If we all have a solid month we can be really competitive. We just have some bad luck the last couple months. Maybe next month will be different.
