Quests do tell you what you require including Job Rank #.
Thats nice, but I have never had to use such work arounds for any game. I too uTorrented all of the patches which was just not fun.

The SW mouse fix is nice if I was still playing that beta.

Still terribly noob unfriendly, I saw that but I sure as hell didn't know where to get the mining pick I needed to get that job so it was useless.

How do you pick up a 9th quest? It wouldn't let me exchange out my completed/failed quests for a new quest.

Before I continue, do you like MMOs? Cause if you don't this probably isn't the game for you, and I am not trying to convince anyone otherwise to play it.
Its still in beta, those playing can only hope for the few things you mentioned to be changed/fixed before launch.

I do agree its not new user friendly, but thats why we have a linkshell to help eachother.

At the moment you can only pick up 8 leve quests & 8 local quests per 48 hours.
You can still join others and help them with there quests and get a nice reward.

I love MMOs, played Runescape for abit, was Guild Waring it up but thats more or less PvP rather than a true MMO and then was playing WoW for a year, played Aion for a little bit and other no name MMOs. Thats the reason I disliked this game, I couldn't just go out and grind mobs to try out my new spells or to advance through the levels in this Final Fantasy game since only through quests could I make a mob appear. . its such a terrible idea. I hope for the games sake that past the starter zones you can just engage in monsters that arn't going to 2 shot you like dodo birds, (Okay, seriously, WHAT THE F? It took me 15 mins to finally get a post on here to let me know to go to the menu and hit Return once I died from a mob in the starter zone that 2 hit me. . since I can't talk when I was dead and even if I did, no one in the game would help. I couldn't get help in the game at all)

And seriously, the guy tells me in the game to exchange them and I couldn't figure it out because they capped it onpurpose. . thats just makes this game seem even sadder to me, have to cap the open beta because of a lack of total game content or something? I'm a terrible addict if I can get my time to play on a Saturday or something, so I am not a fan of a game with a cap on how long I can play my main class and cap on questing? (If thats to make it to the retail version)

This game as a whole really lacks luster or any innovation to me in the MMO scene, atleast Aion introduced some fun flying. . and this beta was quite the turn off that I'm sure they lost ALOT of sales right off the bat. Why is this game's UI made for a controller, I don't have a controller I have a freaking computer with a keyboard and mouse. The console version comes out in a year, I don't think the games servers will be profitable enough to stay online for a year with all the flaws I've seen. .

It just sounds like this isn't the MMO for you, unfortunately. Even once they get all the bugs fixed, the UI fixed, etc, it probably still won't.

It's the type of MMO that attracts a niche crowd. Most of the people I know who are really into it are old hats when it comes to MMOs (when I say old hats, I mean they've been playing MMOs since the late 90s, Everquest etc). Players who have come into the genre later, after most MMOs moved to an instant gratification model, don't usually get into it because it doesn't fit their idea of what an MMO is supposed to be, which is unfortunate, because this game is closer to true MMORPG roots while being very innovative at the same time.

The thing with the levequests is to encourage group play. You get a bunch of your friends together, all of you pick up your quests. You just have ONE person at a time activate them, and you all participate. You all get the rewards. Then the next person starts theirs, etc etc.

There are mobs in the starting area that you can grind on. You probably are just having a hard time finding them because there are so many other players around grabbing them up. I found a nice little spot where I can grind non stop.

You also have to con mobs (this is the term used when you check the mobs difficulty relative to your level). If it is blue, go for it. If it is green, you should still be able to take it, but sometimes not. If it is yellow or red, stay the hell away from it. Some of them are hostile as well, and will attack you if you get too close.

In the original Final Fantasy Online (FFXI), in the beginning, it was a lot tougher doing quests and grinding. After the first handful of levels, the weakest of mobs would own you if you weren't in a group (except for a couple of jobs/classes). There was no quest journal. There was no "go here and do this". Most of the time, if you didn't go and look the quest up on an internet site, you wouldn't even know if you were on a quest, while you were on it.

I hear they changed things later on (I wasn't around, left after about a year. Was one of the first NA players to hit level cap on my world server and ran out of things to do).

FFXIV is years beyond FFXI when it comes to holding your hand and guiding you through things.

I am giving this beta alot of effort to see if I like it. Like Mas said this probably isn't for you if your hoping instant gratification.

Ive been playing MMOs since isometric games. - Astonia at its time it was $10 a month.
So you can say im a "old hat"
I was in middle school at the time, if I would have showed that to anyone I knew they would have been like what the heck is that junk.
Believe this was around 1998?

Found SS, thats in a PVP arena.

I do see alot of the problems you pointed out cause I do agree with most, I am trying to look past them in hopes of making this my next MMO after LOTRO.
After Warner Bros took over LOTRO, I had to sadly cancel cause they were changing too much.

I can understand that Chris, I guess it is more like that. I had no intentions to crap on the game in its official thread, and it is not without its good quality's. The graphics are the type I like, its lowest is pretty good to push the rest of the world to upgrade and if it does get a large fan base, Steam hardware surveys start showing higher end cards being more common then I'm sure game developers won't be afraid to cater to that small crowd of enthusiasts. I think Blizzard sold themselves short on Starcraft II keeping it doable on a single core and optimized for dual cores to do their best not to ward off anyone.

I didn't play too much of the beta but from the two different starting cutscenes I saw, if there are anymore like that with the orchestra they threw in there to keep its audio top notch like the other Final Fantasies then I very well might be Youtubing them epic cutscenes.

It isn't my cup of soup but I didn't realize it was some people's, I'm more of a lone wolf so relying in groups is really not my style for just plain questing >,< hope they can fix things up before retail or early into retail and maybe I'll pick it up if I like what I hear.

If it's any consolation, you should be able to solo through most of the game this time around (as opposed to FFXI where you couldn't). It would just be a bit slower is all.

Don't forget, once you get into the swing of things, there are also other ways to play. You can spend your entire FFXIV career as a crafter, leveling up crafting and playing the market. Or as a gathering class.

I'm still on the fence myself on which I'm planning on doing. I might end up deciding to play this game primarily as a trader, making as much money as I can, and playing as an adventurer when I need a break from the gathering and crafting.

Wow, not a game for me. I tried it for 10 min and mainly because my computer isn't good enough is what turns me away, but I do admit it is very nice.

Well, running with a SINGLE GTX 470 has alleviated a lot of the stuttering.... So sad

Anyways, I'm stuck waiting for some event at the Harbor where you start? There is nothing to do yet... Going to have to get back into the "we don't hold your hand" mindset of yesteryear. Haven't had to use it in a game for quite awhile, except for LIMBO (360)!

**LilChris** You and I are in the same boat. We're "old"! lol

Played for several hours tonight. Definitely a buggy/laggy game still (yes, I know its a beta, but even betas shouldn't be this bad). With only an average of 4k people per server from what I am hearing so far, lag like this should NOT happen.

What really got me was the horrible lag. Trying to play a thaumaturgist and having to hit enter after I tell it to cast every spell? BS. Most of the time, I would tell it to cast a spell, hit enter, come back 10 seconds later and it still hasn't even started and by then the mob has run off and is out of range even though it appears to be pretty close. Or it will cast a spell, land it, then I can't do anything else for the next minute because the UI isn't accepting any commands while the mob is wailing on me at will. Try to run away? Can't do that because I can't end attack mode to run at full speed.

Also had a bug earlier where my minimap vanished, was there one minute, gone the next. Had to log out and back in because there is no way to toggle it.

Next, I run low on mana... how do I get it to regenerate? Dunno. No help files and it sure doesn't automatically regenerate even while sitting. Some research says I have to run back to a crystal to get it back? No thanks. Spellcasters get to sit around and occasionally cast spells while physical fighters get to have fun? ***?

I'm way beyond old school when it comes to MMOs. Been playing MUDs for almost 20 years now and before that, I played RPGs since the C64. None have been this poorly designed IMHO. I am also an EQ1, WOW, and FFXI (made it to level 40RDM/BLM/WHM before I got tired of the stupid level quests and waiting hours for a group because soloing doesn't exist) vet as well.

I don't mean to make anyone who truly likes this game upset, but the reality is this game is far from end-user ready.

However, the graphics and 3D depth are very nice.
