In terms of wattage, I've got plenty of power for it. I don't imagine 4GHz to be much of a problem, especially on the EP45T-USB3P (It's a UD3 board, generally capable of pushing 500FSB on quads), but temperatures and voltages would be a concern. The max safe for quads is 1.362v which could be a bit inhibiting since I am on air cooling.
Either way, I've bought it now and shall enjoy the overclocking challenge. Wish me luck

And as for mod progress, I've done nothing today. I'm hoping to pop down to the warehouse tomorrow to get those marble pieces I mentioned, and I'm waiting for my rotary tool to arrive before I continue with any cutting work. I realised that I forgot to cut the hole for the 8pin ATX, so I'll have to do that in addition to the cutting I already have to do.
I'll probably pick up some acrylic soon to start work on the shroud, and I've decided against putting connecting the front panel audio since the EP45T-USB3P has the connectors at the back of the board which would ruin my neat cabling.

Okay, overdue update at 4 AM. I'll spare you all the gruesome details, because it did get pretty bad; a lot of metal was butchered.

I've got all the cable management holes done and I've literally just finished sanding the whole thing down to bare metal. On some pieces, I didn't go down to bare metal simply for the sake of saving time and effort and they're not showpieces. The front and back panels (case doors) took the longest since they're the main showpieces so I put the most effort in those.
My hands are unbelievably sore

The acrylic I ordered arrived a few days ago - 3 sheets of gloss black and 1 clear frosted plexi. They accidentally sent a tinted black sheet instead of the frosted plexi first, so they sent that out free of charge I still need to get some solvent or whatever it is that I need to join the pieces. *Need to re-read CyberDruid's guide on working with Acrylic*

Also, the QX9650 arrived and works I set it up to make sure it works and quickly bench test it - I hit 3.5GHz with out breaking a sweat with a stock cooler. This will be fun to OC. I sold my Q9300 on eBay for £90 inc p&p.

I'm contemplating getting a OCZ Vertex 2E or Corsair Force 60GB SSD to use as my boot drive, but I'm not certain. I know the performance boost will be epic, but I'm just being careful about my spending. If I get my brother to buy it, he can get it for £100~, otherwise it's between £117-120 depending on which one and where I buy it.
Is there an obvious difference between them that would make one the better choice?

Okay, I think that's it for now.

Did some work on it today. I've never painted before, so I wanted to test my technique on a single panel before I start working with all the pieces.

Applying Primer
Applied primer to one face of the back panel - 3 light coats and the odd touch-up where needed.

T-Rex Terrorises Birmingham

Stencil
Between coats, I spent time making a stencil for my logo.

Stencil
Not all of the lines are perfectly straight like I wanted them to be, but it's no big deal. Looking back, I should have held a ruler to the edge to make sure it's perfect but it's done now. In the photo, it's sitting on the cutting mat for easy viewing.
On a related note - it took an unbelievable amount of force to cut through! It's a cereal box card which had my printed logo over (2 sheets of A4 paper), yet it felt like I was cutting through rubber.

Hardware: QX9650
And finally, a shot of the QX9650 that was still on my camera.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I bought a Corsair F60. It was either that or the OCZ Vertex 2E and, though I've never had a problem with OCZ's customer support (had to RMA a PSU once), I've heard that Corsair's customer support is better. Hopefully I won't need to find out.

I thought the same, but decided to do some more research. The Corsair support forums make for some scary reading. The Force series have a number of issues with them, such as hanging and BSOD's when resuming from S3 Sleep. I kinda lost my nerve on that so I switch my order to the Vertex 2E instead. Also, seeing as OCZ is in bed with Sandforce, I might as well go for that.

As for case mod progress - all the pieces are outside hanging on the washing line, covered in fresh primer. I'm going to lightly sand it with 400 grit tomorrow to level it, then paint it. According to the weather report, I've got until about 9PM tomorrow before it starts raining, so I want everything to be touch dry by then so I can move it indoors.

EDIT: Oh ffs. Mum brought the pieces inside before I got downstairs. I set them down one by one on the table, but the damage had been done. Somehow, the primer had been scratched in places. Tomorrow, I'm going to have to go get some more primer and recoat it. Again. Another day gone to waste.

So, yesterday I recoated the primer, and today I started with colour painting

If there's anything I've learned today, it's that no matter how well primed a piece of metal is, it will never match the adhesion of a human fingernail. I still haven't managed to get all the paint off my nails

If there's anything else I've learned today, it's that Murphy's law is a .
I was expecting rain today, and it didn't happen all morning. I stayed at home, holed up in the kitchen keeping an eye out on the garden checking for any signs of pending rainfall; nothing.

So at lunch time, I decided to go pick up a book from the library and get some lunch. Coincidentally, the book I went to get was Abhorsen - the final book in The Old Kingdom trilogy - the first book is Sabriel which is what I've named this case mod after.
Anyway, it started raining while I was out. I quickly phoned my sister and asked her to move everything into the shed to avoid it getting soaked, which she did. By the time I got home (10-15 minutes later), it stopped raining.

I dried off the excess rainwater and checked for any damage - it was mostly okay, just the odd scratch. So I gave it another coat and hung it outside again. The sky was clear so I figured, why not?
I went inside to wash my hands after I'd hung everything up - just as I started washing, it starts raining again.

After that, I just left everything in the shed and worked in there.

Time for pics:

Painting

Hidden Text Below! (Click to show)

All hung up
Everything after being primed

First Blood
This is the first piece I colour-painted and it happens to be the only all-red piece on the outside of the case. I just had to use "first blood" as the title

DVD drive, PCI Slot covers and Nexus DoubleTwins
[i]These are just being primed up. In the morning, they'll be ready to paint black. The PCI slot covers are going to be black in particular to provide sharp contrast against the red of that part of the chassis. The Nexus DoubleTwins will be red for the exact opposite effect inside the case (though it won't be very visible).

House, Seasons 1-3
I love how this red came out, it's beautiful. I was worried it would be messed up because the shop display said to use red primer but I used grey, but wow, the vividness of the red is perfect.
Also, ignore the background, this was inside the shed where everyone dumps everything.

Satin Obsession
I had originally picked up matt black paint, but I needed a video guide to show me how to take apart my DVD drive and I came across a video of a paint job in which he used satin black which looked great, so that's what I've switched to.
Again, ignore everything in the background

Tomorrow, I hope to get the side panel done with my logo on it along with the rest of the case. Then it's just clearcoating left before it's ready to reassemble.

Thank you.
I'm off to do some more painting today. I decided to save the side panels for last because those are the showpieces which require the most effort. So in the interest of saving time, I'm going paint those while everything else is getting a coat of clear lacquer. The only things left to paint are the drive bay sides (I'm abandoning the stock drive cages completely) and the roof of the case (not the plastic roof, the metal one).

Oh, and I just ordered a H70. I think someone should take my debit card away before I do any more damage Dx

Edit: For the love of god, never paint on grass on a windy day. I'm literally sitting here watching paint dry, making sure no more loose blades of grass get on the paint.

Edit 2: Also, I've painted the inside of the side panels. The were some left over rivets I hadn't fully removed from the case roof and while removing them I accidentally scratched up the primer, so I've had to recoat that.

Edit 3: I lifted the side panel off the newspaper, only to find that some paper had gotten underneath and bonded the paper with the panel. I had to sand that off and reapply primer.

Edit 3.5: Also, wooo! 1000 Views
