ok im in a pickel here. its spring time which means new computer! after like months of research and stuff, since its my bday im getting 1000 canadian and which means im spedining it all on my new computer cuase my old 1 i gave it away. So after a whole AMD vs Intel desition i came up with the Intel Pentium D 920 Presler CPU. But after looking at a CPU upgrading article, the conroe promises alot and sounds good. I was wondering should i upgrade or wait for a month or two to see what happens? Right now my current setup plan was a:
Intel Pentium D 920 Presler - $300
Asus P5WD2 Premium - $224
OCZ\\Corsair 1 GB DDR2 Ram - $100
ATI 1900XT - $300(getting half off )
Case - $35 (getting half off )
PSU (not sure which yet) - $80

What do you think i should do?

I would say: wait a couple of months, if not the 920 should do. Although in late April Intel is going to cut the prices on current Preslers somewhere around 17% to 50.3%.

So instead of going for a 920, you could end up with a 940 for almos the say price, maybe slightly higher but not bank breaking.

If you wait for a Conroe set-up, best bet would be the P5WD2-E Premium which is the one with the 975 chispet, because the 955X (P5WD2-Premium) will definitely not support it.

The ATI X1900XT is a powerfull card and it should last for at least 2 years. So no worries on that, unless you like to benchmark and brag about numbers, then yes wait for a DX10 card, IMO I cruise along with my 6800 GS, plays anything I throw at it no need for more HP. Although I'd buy/pay $300 for a X1900XT.

One thing I forgot to mention is that for DDR2, Corsair XMS2 RAM is the best. As for the PSU? The Enermax Liberty 500W should do.

Will get the Asus-E Premium Mobo with 975x. your saying that will suport the new CPUs coming from intel? and it has newer crossfire chipset. that retails for 269 :/ sounds ok i guess i can do that if i wait the month

Yes, the P5WD2-E Premium supports CrossFire. And here's a link showing the price cuts in late April: Link Here.

Now, going back to the 975X supporting a Conroe CPU? That's where I'm still so confused, yet I want to be certain of what I red, then again it will all get clear out right after I see a fellow overclocker whom has a Conroe CPU in his posetion and will be using "maybe" a P5WD2-E Premium 975X MoBo.

If no support then I'd say wait for one that does but if you're in a hurry to build one then full speed ahead........But chances are that it will support a Conroe CPU. ASUS is the best when it comes to Intel stuff.

30 June 2006- Pentium D 920 production to be stopped

Quote:
Intel told customers it would not be upgrading the 920 to the C-1 core - it's currently on version B-1 - suggesting the part wasn't long for this world. All other 9xx dualies - the 930, 940 and 950 - are getting the update, which cuts the chips' overall power consumption.

meaning they will update the 9XX series exept the 920 which will be stoped production.

Yes but that doesnt stop it from being the best overall bang for the buck when it comes to duallies, although the 930 has an overall higher averaged overclock, the 920 is right on its tail and cost quite a bit less, and sometime this month will be way cheap. So if you cant wait for another 6 months or so, this will be a very good system for you.
