Which socket for upgraded cpu cooling?

Thread Starter
Sorry for the newb-ness, but I have a question I cannot find out about anywhere it seems.

I'm getting the Athlon X2 3800+, and I know it is socket 939, so do I need a Socket 939 cpu fan? I've noticed that most fans are socket A, which is older tech but is that only for cpu's? Is it different for the cooling? Hope you can shed some light!

I know that, but I plan to OC my Athlon X2 3800+ and I know that the OEM fan will not be sufficient cooling for my rig. I won't be buying my hardware for about a month so I have time to plan ahead and figure out what I'm getting.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...TTR12=&ATTR13=

That link there should provide you with all of the socket 939 cpu fans/heatsinks available on Newegg.com. Refine your search a little more if you need to, just don't adjust the "combatibilitu" menu and you'll always be selecting a 939 fan/heatsink. But, whichever one you select, be sure to double-check the compatibility of it that it is indeed 939. All in all, that link should do the trick to give you your best results.

EDIT: Very many people have taken quite the liking to the ThermalTake BigTyphoon. link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835106061

If what you're buying is listed in your signature, get a better case and power supply. Also, if this is a first time build for you, you might want to wait on overclocking and just get used to your PC first so that way you can learn its various quirks. Also, the new stock AMD heatsinks are supposed to be pretty good. If you really want to go aftermarket, you will need a heatsink that supports socket 939. Some good suggestions are any of the supported Zalman coolers, the Thermaltake Big Typhoon, and the Tuniq Tower 120.

Ya I'm definitely not going with the Ultra 600W, heard bad things about it off and on. I don't know which to go with yet since PSUs are a delicate subject. Any reccomendations for a 600W PSU? It has to be SLi ready, as well since I plan on adding another eVGA 7900 GT this fall.

The case, I will be getting all acrylic, but not from Xoxide. I just put that because the one I'm getting is from a local retailer and I don't know the brand. It has 2 fanholes in the side, 1 in the top, 1 back, and one front. I think I will use the BigTyphoon, if it fits. The two side fans will blow out, to get rid of the heat that thing will emit. Then have the top fan blowing in, front in, and back out.

I would get a Typhoon, its the best air cooler on the market, and if you want more out of the typhoon then get a higher cfm fan for it, I use them on most of my folding rigs, and not one gose over 45c. under full load folding 24/7.

PS... depending on what you want to spend
Antec, Forton, PC Power, Sunbeam
Of course get SLI certed ... money no object, check out the PC Power... heck they even make 850 and 1000w but you had better be sitting down when you see the price

lol I probably don't wanna spend more than 150 to 200$ canadian. that's not much, but all my other hardware is pretty up there. I'm gonna barely have enough for this rig. I still need to sell my dirt bike for crying out loud!
