First PC Build Ever - need help.

Hey guys, I have always wanted a great gaming PC, and my brother built one about two years ago that I have always been jealous of. Now it is my turn to build one and my brother said this site would be the best place for help. I have some basic knowledge of building a computer, so here is what I have so far:

-Intel Core i7-950
-GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R
-COOLER MASTER V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
-G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
-CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
-Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
-LITE-ON 24X DVD Writer Black SATA Model iHAS424-98 LightScribe Support

Current total cost is $935.38. I would like to keep the cost around $1,100.

I still need a graphics card, which I know little about, and was hoping I could get some feedback on the overall build and the graphics card.

The case I currently have is the COOLER MASTER RC-690, and I was wondering if anyone knows if the CM V8 heatsink would fit in it or not, because that cooler looks huge.

This computer is mainly going to be used for gaming, and I am hoping that I will be able to run all new games on around max settings. Please help me out. Thanks.

What resolution are you using? What games do you play/plan to play?

Anyways, here's a basic build.

Maybe get a i7 930 instead and use the money to get a GTX 460/465/5850

The monitor I am using is the Samsung SynchMaster 2949, which I am using 1920 X 1080 on. I am currently playing Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike, and Left 4 Dead, all around low settings. I can play Aion but minimum settings. I would like to be able to play games like Borderlands, Metro 2033, Stalker, Aion, Bad Company 2, GTA IV, Fallout 3, and more on max settings.

It's only a $15 difference these days. Not the $100 or whatever it used to be.

You should look into an i5 build with a GTX 470. That would suit your budget. I'll build something real quick.

Change the cooler master V8 to a Megahalems Rev. B Includes 2 sets of fan clips for a push and pull setup for max OC

Doesn't come with fans though, so get 2 of these 120x38mm 67CFM high static pressure so works well with cpu coolers + fluid bearing so quiet and long lasting for $30

Thats only a $35 increase and will run your chip ALOT cooler. Also don't forget to pick up some Artic Silver 5 Thermal Paste for $10

Yea that is exactly the reason I am getting it. Newegg is also sold out of the 920, anyway. The build you listed seems great, but doesn't need the case, I already have it.

Another option is to go AMD. I know its not the popular opinion in this thread (cough cough) but you can do quite well with an AMD build.

Not bad but get triple channel DDR3, if you get dual channel you might as well go with a p55 board with an i7 860.

+1 for the megahalems - you don't need the AS5, the prolimatech paste is great and comes free with the heatsink.

also if just for gaming, +1 for amd too, it is cheaper and if you get a crosshair 3 or 4 with a 955 it will perform the same near enough

Which one is better for the hardcore gaming I plan on doing? I hear AMD would be cheaper overall, but ever since the release of the i7 I figured I was gonna go with Intel no matter what.
