A64 or opteron

What would be the difference between the opteron 148 and the athlon 3700+ san diego, other than price?

Nothing really, the 3700 overclocks just as well as the opty. The optys are more "durable" so to speak. They are server chips that got adopted by overclockers and gamers.

that would be the general thought. earlier steppings of the opteron OC'd much better than the 3700sd's, but lately the a64s have been doing almost as good.

I got my opty even though it cost more and I really like it.

other than "maybe" the opteron would last longer than the retail san diego but the opterons tend to run warmer then retail versions so I guess its all relative. Also AMD does not like people using opterons for anything other than servers and workstations and are even selective about which motherboards there alowed in even though they'll work in just about any s939 board. If you have a problem it will probably easier to warranty a retail 3700 than an opteron. Whatever version you get know that if you buy OEM you won't get that great 3 year warranty from purchasing a boxed retail version.

It depends where you get it from. Newegg usually has a 30 day return thing. And I'm pretty sure there is no AMD warranty for OEM cpus, because they do not come with the stock cooler, which is manditory for RMAing processors.

the new 3700+ steppings seem to do pretty well. Some get 3ghz with them without insane voltage.

I would agree, for the single core processors I would reccomend a 3700+ rather then an opty.

The Opteron's memory controller is said to be slightly slower than the 3700's, because the meomry controller was designed to be in a server, and run more stable. I would have to go with the 3700 also. I've been seeing people reach really high OCs with newer chips (like beserkjay said above).
