Overclocking: What am i doing wrong? (i3 BTW) (on the right track now :D )

Thread Starter
So i have been having issues overclocking on my sig rig.

The overclocking i understand for the most part, but i cannot get anything perfectly stable over 3.6ghz.

Im looking to get at least 4-4.2ghz, and im sure my rig can do it, im just having a lot of problems getting there. (i have gotten there, but it was far from stable.)

I cannot even get stable just setting my ram to "stock" settings of 6-8-6-24 1T, even at 1333mhz, when the ram is rated at 1600mhz. I can get it stable at 1T, but have to set it to 8-8-8-24 1T, and stock settings for cpu.

Anyone able to help me? i cannot find any i3 overclocking guides or anything, and didnt think i could follow the i7 ones, because of different rules for the chips? I just dont understand a lot of what the voltages mean, like PCH, IMC, PLL? do i need to mess with these?

Im going to go jump back in the bios and see if i can get anything stable above 3.6 while im waiting for a response.

Im on my Netbook while im messing with my sigrig...

Running LinX right now, max memory.

Current Settings:

167(.5?)x22 (3674mhz, cpuz says 3685) @ 1.28v (just to make sure voltage is not the issue, i know it doesnt need this much.)
Memory: 8-8-8-24 1T @ 670mhz (1340mhz) 1.65v
NB@ 2680mhz
C1E/Speedstep off for now.
CPUZ valid

While i was typing it has finished a single run @ ~24GFloPs, max temp is 58C/56C on the cores in coretemp.

Cant think what else to list, but i can figure it out if anyone needs to know.

So above specs are stable, passed 12 passes of linx so far, max temp of 59C/57C, so it did go up a bit, but is sitting at 57C/56C for the most part. Gonna go back and see if i can get 200mhz more, which is were i began to get issues.

Also: tried droping timings to 7-8-7-24 1T, also stable, but no difference in GFLoPs, so ill just keep them at 8s.

So i guess as soon as i make a thread asking for assistance, it starts to be stable no issues :/ So unless anyone has a reason why my ram isn't stable at stock speeds, you can disregaurd this thread.

got stable @ 3.9, but increase in temps and GFLoPs, i dont think its worth it for the overclock, so ill just stick to 3.6 and see how low i can get the volts.

I would push volts, but i am clueless about what is "too far" for volts for anything, especially ram, and i certainly dont want to break anything, since i dont have money to be spending on replacing anything.

And i can get it stable, just not near what its rated for

For DDR3 i think the safe voltage is around 1.65~1.7v, i THINK. Just push them up little by little!

Thread Starter
Well i am a complete idiot. I figured out why my overclocks werent stable. I saw THIS guide and read over it, and i guess i was missing a LOT of the stuff i was supposed to do, namely the IMC voltage. it was 1.08, which apparently is FAR too low, now it is ~1.22v and so far stable with max mem in LinX, memory @ 762mhz and 7-8-7-24 1T im slowly pushing it, but thats as far as i think i will push the mem, might go for 6-8-6-24 1T which is stock settings.

So this is great that i figured it out, but there still is an issue im having...
CPU-Z is showing QPI @ ~2.2ghz.... which i know is WAY too low, but i set it to ~4.4ghz in the bios...

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1380846

is there any reason that this is happening?
(NOTE: my cpu multi is @ 20x because im making sure that my mem/bclk is stable, and not cpu volts or whatever.

Also; that cpuz valid is so far stable, its on its 8th pass on Max mem linx.

Don't have a direct response to your questions, but to address your desire for an overclocking guide for the i3 series. Try this link for an i3 overclock guide.

I have not read the full guide but the poster seems to be credible enough, so it's probably a safe place to start. Good luck.
