2 e-GeForce 6800 GS SLI or 1 Xfx 7900 Gt

Thread Starter
I purchased 2 6800 for SLI last week so slap happy I could finaly afford SLI. I later looked at the benchmarking on lower resolutions (1280x1024 and lower) and looks like its the same speed or SLOWER! The Xfx 7900 GT seems to be the best for the money from what I can tell so far. Core clock of 520Mhz and a memory speed around 1500MHz.

From what I can tell the 7900 GT (PV-T71G-UDE7) kicks ass for the money. Any down sides or are most other cards just over priced compaired to it?

Most other cards are overpriced compared to the 7900gt it is really the sweet spot for performance right now. Personally I would keep your current 2xgs's they will serve you well in almost any game on max settings. Oblvion, FEAR, and COD2 all perform exetremely well with 2x6800gs. So just keep those for now as you will really see little to no improvement from the 7900gt and just wait til they can't play games the way you want or until Windows Vista and Direct X 10 make us all buy new cards anyway.

If you can change the GSes with a 7900GT it could become intresting if or when you decide to buy another 7900GT for a SLI config. Otherwise, as malaziel said, the GSes will handle all the games very well 'till DX10 shows up.

I think I am gunna go with the 7900GT because its the same price but when the price drops I'll just add another! (Save $ from having to upgrade twice) Nvidias website says 7900 supports Vista.

http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_7900.html

It also looks like most of the newer cards will fully support vista.

Support through emulation, which is supposed to be extremely slow. You will still need to upgrade to a dx10 card, sadly.

In my opinion, you should never buy two cards with the intention of SLI on the same day. With that kind of money, you could invest in a higher-end card and then when you have additional money, you should invest into a matching card in SLI.

I would switch them for the 7900GT. Costs about the same, but will cost far less to operate and will be less taxing on the system.

Yep, sent back the two 6800s today and my damn Xfx 7900 is on back order! I ordered it from Monarch.com and they are saying that Xfx is screwing the etailers and not shipping them. So there is no exact date when they are getting them back in although some people on the boards are saying around the 4th.
