p55 chipset limitations?

Thread Starter
i got a p55a-gd55 mobo from msi and im picking this up tmr, but i jsut read that this chipset cant support SLI, with sata 3 and usb 3

this worries me because im going to be using gtx 460s in sli with a sata 3 hard drive, and i was wondering if this will limit performance? and will i still be able to use usb 3? because of all the forums ive read, nobody addresses the issue and i really want some opinions

I heaven't heard anything like that, no. But the SLI will be x8/x8 and that's hardly any bottleneck.

That motherboard doesn't support sli.
But there are other p55 motherboards that do. I guess you should have researched the product before you bought it.

He's got a point there. You can try to do a SLI hack, but why do that when you can just buy an ASUS?

Why do you need SATA 3 and USB 3 anyway? SATA 3 is only useful on SSDs and USB 3 isn't useful at all (ok, maybe not true, but for a while it won't be).

Hrm. The chipset itself supports SLI in certain configurations, as seen in the block diagram:

http://techreport.com/r.x/intel-p55/block.gif

The manual for the P55A-GD55 states on page 1-3:

2 PCIE 2.0 x16 slots
- PCI_E2 supports up to PCIE 2.0 x16 speed (when PCI_E5 is empty)
- If you intend to install two expansion cards into both PCI_E2 & PCI_E5 slots, these
two PCIE 2.0 x16 lanes will auto arrange from x16/ x0 to x8/ x8
- Support Multi-GPU technology

Manual says that SLI should be supported...

Product page lists crossfirex and not SLI. If it's not mentioned, it's not supported.

sli requires the board manufacturer to get a license from nvidia, while crossfire can work on any system as long as you can plug 2 gpus into the board.

you guys are looking at the wrong board, the one that does not support sli is
p55-gd55
NOT p55A-gd55
note the extra A
which is why i hate how msi names their mobos,

also, the bottleneck worries me because I am using a sata 3 hard drive and i might get a SSD to boot windows and get a usb 3 enclosure for my old hard drive

-i read the manual online and it said something about a marvell Se9128 for the sata 3 6gb/s so anyone have any idea what that is?
