Deathchiller 2, benching unit

Hi all.

I decided to consolidate my threads so as to make pic organizing easier and to give the chiller a different thread considering the modifications currently being made and those in store for it. Since it is no longer an in-case setup and is now a dedicated benching unit, I consider it a separate build by now.

Any ways what's going on here is of course I took the chiller out of the case and gave it a 'platform' to live on and gave it a dedicated and insulated loop.

I then used 100 proof vodka as my fluid, and used it for benching.

Here are some pics.

Alas all good things come to an end...or do they?

I could only ever achieve -10°C on the vodka. Ever.

I think part of the reason is the very short (3') cap tube that I salvaged from the AC where the compressor came from.

Another inefficiency that was inherent in the design was the exchanger's position and it's habit of trapping air.

Some more minor tidbits need to be worked on, namely the electrical stuffs and securing everything better.

All of this and more is incoming! Stay tuned!

So here is an update

Work done so far, new captube and new exchanger design.

New exchanger. Basically instead of the evap inside of the water loop, now the water loop is inside of the exchanger. Inb4 cascade =] (thats pretty much where the idea came from)

The brass is the inlet, the copper is the outlet. I still need to flare the copper outlet as it is 3/8" and my 7/16" tubing is huge on it..(there is a joke in there somewhere O_o)

Cap tube dumps near the 180 bend, suction pics up at the other end. While I did want to run the evap through the full 180 bend, I just didn't have the material to do it with and I am trying to do this with as little investment as possible and still do things "right" as I am currently between jobs (start work on the 13th thankfully though).

Hopefully this design will eliminate some of the issues I was having previously and yield better efficiency.

The cap tube definitely makes a difference. Its also interesting, as soon as things start icing over, it completely ices over FAST. This is something I didn't see on the shorter cap tube.

about 7 minutes in..

maybe 1 minute later, possibly 2..

I have not water tested it yet as my pump died and I am considering whether or not to scavenge the last bit of my water setup for the sake of the chiller and just ride with air cooling for the time being...dunno yet.

Stay tuned!

Well my only spare water pump bit the dust the other day and I've been really busy with school and starting a new job this week.

I have a dd system next on the line but I do want to finish this one first. So either I will buy another pump or I will break down the loop that is currently cooling my GPU.

Dunno yet. Haven't had time to really sit and play with it >_<.
