Newb questions

Thread Starter
I looked for a better place to post dumb questions but couldn't find one. I have a few questions and would appreciate any help.

1. I have a crapload of mp3s and .mpgs over 100GB; Is this going to hurt my cpu performance?

2. When I run ATItool, 3dimage or arifact finder, my cpu temp goes up to 52+ and I usually abort is this normal? should I tweak the settings lower (i didn't raise them in the first place)?

3. Under encoding load (ie. wav to mp3, etc) my cpu temp gets up to 58c or so is this normal, do I need more cooling?

4. What can I do to get a bit more from my setup?

Sorry for new guy questions, but thanks for helping!

1. It won't affect cpu performance, just your hard drive. If the drive is nearly full then it will have a harder time looking for stuff. Just defrag fairly often.

2. Do you abort manually or it aborts on its own? Naturally if you are stressing your gfx card it'll generate heat in the case which will also affect the heat of the cpu.

3. depends which Cpu core you have if its a Northwood thats too hot (under 55c is recommended) if its a Prescott they can take up to 65c safely. Run this to find out what core you have (it will also tell u what motherboard you have) http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-133.zip

4. Overclock the snot out of it after you sort out some better cooling.

answers according to their number:
1: yes. very, very badly (edit: nvm, i was wrong. see post above)
2: can someone else answer that one? i don't wanna suggest something that might harm his comp. due to the fact that my knowledge (or lack thereof) on this subject is limited.
3: where do you set your computer? if it is in an enclosed environment (i.e.- a cabnet), open the door or set it out of the containment. but i am probably just stating the obvious.
4: there is a sweet little guide on here on how to get more out of XP. i will try to find it and post the link, provided that someone doesn't do that before i do, or you find it. what ever comes first.

It's a Northwood.
I've done almost all of the XP performance tips.
Abort manually, wanting to not destroy my cpu.
I guess it really comes down to needing better cooling huh?

It would be good to find out what motherboard you have as well if its pre built computer you have there your bios options for overclocking may be very limited/non-existent.

If that is the case you will need both new cooling and a new motherboard to get any more out of that system.

Also what is the stepping and fsb for the cpu? it'll say in cpu-z, if it turns out to be a "c" chip they overclock very well.
