dllhost.exe/COM Surrogate - High CPU Load

So I've been Gooling, but with no avail.

It's a friend of mine's problem.

As you can see COM Surrogate is culprit, but I can't figure out how to solve the issue.

He could disable it, but I'm not sure what effect that could have.

Com surrogate is associated with tumbnail preview. If your friend disables thumbnail preview the problem would be solved.

You will find it in the advanced system settings/performance tab.

Yeah, I've been Googling, and I saw that mentioned.

I also saw mention of perhaps conflicts with bad DivX codecs, so I have advised him to reinstall them, from another, more upto-date source.

I don't really want to have him disable features just yet. I'm hoping there's a more practical solution.

My believe is that there are some issues with corrupted thumbnails causing the system to spike. The high load would indicate that.

Yeah. I get it now, after reading a few more sources. Starting to piece the puzzle together.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...c-db10da2d1346

So, by viewing any media thumbnails, that use the buggy codecs, WinExplorer causes this DLL to launch to protect itself. Which conflicts with the codec itself, causing the spike.

I think...

So yeah, I think we've got it. I'll report back when he's done what I've said.

Cheers for the help

I had been Googling for about 30 minutes prior to making the thread, I just happened to stumble across the better results once I'd made it.

For those of you who are still struggling with this I think I found something. I had some large audio files (and video files) on my desktop. Once I moved those to another folder, the locked 25% dllhost issue cleared.

Prior to that I tried these things which did not solve:
- Malwarebytes Full Scan
- Microsoft Security Essentials Full Scan
- System restore to 2 weeks prior
- Removal of K-lite (Base, Full and 64bit)
- Removal of Tversity
- Close all open programs using procexp
