Noisy chipset fan!

Thread Starter
This fan is the snallest one in my case but the noisiest! God damn!

Has anyone had experience with this problem?

Has anyone ever bought an aftermarket chipset fan? If so what are you impressions?

Hi Bad Haze,

To your question, Yes! My northbridge chipset fan on my MSI motherboard was really loud after about 2 months. I noticed on some of the other MSI boards that were made later, passive cooling was used. So I unplugged it and forgot about it. You might want to do a couple of things.

Try and lube it with 3 in 1 oil. Remove the fan, peel back the label and using a Q-tip with oil on it swab some oil on it. or

See if you can just leave the fan off. ASUSTEK might be able to help you here: http://usa.asus.com/

or buy a new one here: http://www.coolerguys.com/40.html

I hope this helped, :-)

I had bought one about a year ago for an older computer I had. I got it because the north bridge chip was hot to the touch. I can't remember the brand, just remember it was under $10. It wasn't loud at all. I did buy a hard drive cooler that mounted in the 5.25" bay. After a while the fans started making all kinds of noises, so I took it out. Here are some links to some more chip fans.

Excellent increase in performance! I opened up the chipset fan, removed the little plastic sticker and put some wd40 in there... I also took the opportunity to replace whatever ugly guck they used with some nice arctic silver 5. I think my chipset it hovering around 25 celcius now... or is that the ambient temp? Well, its either at 25C or 40C. In any case, it's a hell of a lot quieter than before! Thanks for youre advice!

WD40 will not work very well as a lubricant and will shorten the lifespan of the bearing/sleeve. You would do far better with graphite. WD40 is a loosening agent, not a lubricant.

I think chipset fans are overrated... I unplugged mine long ago and the heatsink is still almost cool to the touch. Not even warm.
