I don't see anything wrong with modding xbox, just like modding computer. If you own it, mod it. You can do so much more with a modded xbox.

I don't fear that kind of thing here in the US. The only illegal thing about modding your XBox is having games/media that you do not own the license to. If you have all things that are your own, then there is nothing wrong with what we're doing. They are, in fact, our own XBox's.

Not if you ripped the game yourself using your copy of it and aslong as the emulator was coded using no code from the original system it's fine.

Also, aren't there some countrys that don't even allow modchips at all? As in it's illegal to even own a modchip let alone have it in a system?

Alot of those old school emulators are prefectly legit also. I believe the copy right on the original NES ran out and its prefectly legal to copy it. Check ebay, theres tons of third party NES' out you can buy.

That's what I got from the article. It seemed to me that chipping is simply illegal in the UK, period, end of story. Obviously it is the exact opposite case in Australia, where the courts have unambiguously ruled that chipping is quite legal. And to the best of my knowledge it has yet to be tested in the US courts, where the grey area of copyright fair use vs. the DMCA could really use some hashing out. I think that the game companies figure it is more cost effective to just limit piracy as best they can than to initiate a multi-year lawsuit that they could very well lose.

I mean, what would make you think that a mature company worth a bajillion dollars would be foolish enough to let the copyrights on their cash cow franchises expire? Believe me, every copyright Nintendo ever had is actively protected.

Heck, even the ancient Atari 2600 copyrights are still active. Hence the periodic games that are collections of old console and arcade games. The old copyrights are protected because those old games still make the companies money.
