Hal.dll WHERE ARE YOU? :(

Thread Starter
This morning I got the well-known "Windows root\\system32.\\hal.dll is missing or corrupt" error. Been reading up on it and tried copying it from the disk using copy d:\\i386\\ha.dl_ etc and that didnt work.

At the moment I am running a suggested chkdsk /p (how long do these usually take?) and will then try a bootcfg /r

Anybody else had this problem just randomly appear before? I know its a well-known problem because Windows has a less than helpful page for it and google showed up a few pages, most reccomending the same things.

Just wondering if anybody else has anything to try?

Did you rename the ha.dl_ to hal.dll? If not, then just do that and you're good to go

Is just rebooting alright? The reason I am doing this is because I read this post :It worked!
What I did:

first, start with the way this previous post started:
Insert the XP disk into the machine and turn it on. A message will appear asking you to press any key to boot to the XP CD. Press any key and the machine will boot to the CD. When the setup screen loads choose the option to repair the windows installation by pressing R.

(if necessary, take a crash course from windows website on dos mode before next step

in dos mode, type:
C:\\>chkdsk /p [enter]
fixboot [enter]
Y [enter]
exit [enter]

Oh I didnt get it to work yet, just read that somewhere I was showing you why I am even doing CHKDSK /p (bootcfg /rebuild wont work until I do)

Can I just reboot while it is doing CHKDSK to try what you said or will that mess anything up? Also, thanks a lot for the help bro

Oh... right. I think it's ok to reboot during a checkdisc but maybe not...

Well I tried what you said and hal.dll on the D: doesnt exist it seems. Anyways, so I go back to restart chkdsk and now it says "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."

Uh-oh... maybe a mechanical failure? Did you hear any odd clicking when it stopped working?
