Opteron @ 2800

Thread Starter
Well after some trial and error I managed to get my Opteron 170 to run stable at 2.8 ghz (10x280) HT x3.0, 1:1 ratio with ram 2.5-3-3-6 (OCZ Plat. rev2)
1.44 v. cpu core, 37/46 idle/max
humm and I cant decide weather I am happy or not

I really wanted to hit 3.0 Ghz and I cant just quite get a hold on what could possibly be holding me back I know its not the ram since I managed to take it up as far as 317 with those timings (stoped going up sicen I know I wont go up that high) I tried increasing the core voltage as far as 1.52 and it ran @ 290x10 but it would get an error and shutdown.... is it just more voltage that I need, I havent tried uping it any further since Im scared Ill fry my chip... Im hopping a more experienced overclocker can shed some light on how i could get this to 3.0ghz? what is safe on these chips (voltage wise)?? mine came stock at 1.31v and now is at 1.44v (according to CPU-Z and Everest)

this is with a DFI Lan Party Ultra D NF4

Welcome to the forms. Fill in your system specs under quick link.
Well 2.8 is a pretty good overclock, for that dual core cpu. I'd be happy with that. The opty's I've noticed like low voltage.
Upping vcore could help but also might not. Just watch load temps and keep them at/under 50c.

it will be fine up to 1.55V and 1.6V is the max, if the temp is okay (doubt u wanna run that high if you are not watercooled.)

Has any one here hit 3.0 Ghz on one of these?? with either water cooling or air??

what is the average overclock on these dual cores??

also can voltage really hurt a procesor? or can you up it as far as you want as long as temps are bellow 50* C at full load

more voltage = more heat, so if you up it, temps will raise. 2.8 is a great OC, I'd be very happy with it unless you want to save up a couple hundred dollars and build a nice watercooling system.

yeah actually Im in the process of getting one but Im unsure if I should,
since well If it unsafe to over clock any higher its rather pointless to get it cause a 47*C under max load after 9 hours of prime95 and SuperPi is pretty good temps

SO my questions still exists "with proper cooling" (ie phase change/ water).... is it safe to push my chip to higher than 1.65 v in order to achieve 3.0ghz+ or is it a suicide trip?

As long as your temps are low, it should be fine. Although I don't know that it will help much, Opterons tend to like lower voltages. It is possible you've just hit your max. 800MHz on a dual core is nothing to sneeze at. Good luck with that watercooling, and hope you can reach 3Ghz.

What is your stepping?

EDIT:
Here is some stats.
Some people got to 2.9-3.2 but it depends on your stepping and basicly luck.
3.0 CCB1E 0550
3.2 CCB1E0 550 no IHS
2.9 CCBWE 0548
3.0 CCBWE 0548
