Yes probably because the canon models are hard plastics you have to go up and up into the canon 50D area of canon to get metal housings ect.

Same applies for Nikon until you hit the D300/D300s.

Ahh okay gotcha. Marin i know your a big photographer from what i've seen. What would you recommend for a first DSLR? Im pretty much looking at the Nikon D3000 / D5000 and a Cannon EOS Rebel XS / T1i at this point.

They're both good, so you really can't go wrong with either. It's really hard to recommend one brand when someone is starting since there's a lot of things which can factor into the decision, which at this point, you really can't make.

True.

I guess i just need to find a place where i can get both hands on it and feel how much i prefer the different body's.

If you feel cramped by the D5000, try a D90. Slightly bigger, and the price should be dropping in the next few weeks after its replacement is announced.

Definitely feel the bodies before you buy. The XS and D3K are very similar to each other, as are the T1i and D5k. I'd definitely recommend you base your choice off of body ergonomics.

My personal recommendation since you're new: Invest in the XS/D3000 and spend the remainder of your budget on lenses. Investing in lenses is definitely a better option than investing in a slightly stepped up body. Once you get great at photography, skip the Rebel T1x/xxD series and go straight for a 7D or 5D Mk II (or Nikon equivalent).

Thats a good idea honestly. Maybe go for a D3K kit and get used to how different it is, then look into better lenses?
