3700 SD to 2.8ghz = FX-57 performance??

Thread Starter
ok i was just wondering the other day what cpu to get in my new rig il be building soon and ive decided on the athlon 3700 SD core...and i was looking at the FX-57 aswell, obviously it is way out of my price range but the only difference i see in the FX-57 and 3700 is that the clock speed differs from 2.8ghz down to 2.2ghz...L1/L2 cache is the same and everything else seem to be too....so i was wondering if i would get the 3700 and overclock it to 2.8ghz (seems they are very good ocers, so it shouldnt be too hard), and also get my ram to run 1:1 with it....wouldnt i have effectivly got an FX-57 for a lot cheaper??

anyhelp is appreciated and if i have been mislead, could someone correct me.
thanks

Yup you can do it easy, I have my opteron at 2.8 on stock cooling 38 idel and 48 load, but if its hotinside your house you need a better cooler maybe a G-power, or a Big typhoon. Your motherboard looks like it will be easy coookin.

well, you wouldn't have a fx cpu, but you can have the same or similar performance of one.
if you are looking at the sdFX57 and the 3700+sd, then they have the same core and the difference is that the fx57 has the multipliers unlocked and is guaranteed to run at 2.8Ghz. the 3700+ is only guaranteed to run 2.2Ghz and has a cpu multi of 11x

but yeah, I like your reasoning. It's really easy to get some DDR500, set your htt multi to 4x, your htt to 250Mhz and run your 3700+ or opty 148 at 2.75Ghz, which is only 50mhz less than the fx57. That's what I did. I haven't spent time to mess around and take my oc higher, but I'm happy with it for right now. If I can get some wc I'll prob try to take it to 3.0Ghz

you should get better cooling if you're going to oc like that the max on these chips is like 55-60 depending on what one you get, and I personally wouldn't let mine hit 50, heck I like to keep mine at 40 or lower.

my lapped bt keeps my load temps at 38-40

If i can get my 4400+ to 3.0 GHz, a san diego should be no problem because is produces less heat stock and they are outrageous overclockers...you should be abel to get it weith ~1.6v

Mine does 2.8ghz with very little voltage , actually i ran if for along time without any at all, but 1.425 seems to be the best for me from 1.4v stock. When it was on air with a venus12 , it ran 45-46c load @2.8 . @ 3ghz it needs 1.6v and loads @35-36c with water , i never ran in this high on air so ive no idea on temps .

Just remove it. I personally would not do it, but there are many on this very site that have with great success. I believe it has lowered load temps by as much as 5c. I think there is a guide on here if you search for it, and others over the web.

ive seen a lot of people with temps dropping after removing the IHS, but jsut be prepared to buy another CPU if you mess it up. i've personally been too chicken to do this and i would think it would affect the resell value too.

You would actually have slightly better performance, because the HTT and RAM would be running much faster than they would on the FX57 with its 14x multiplier. However, the FX series are easier to overclock, because they have unlocked multipliers.
