simple. make a water trap that drowns them and pushed the items out to a collection area

I have been doing alot research and making my own over the last few days, here's what I've learnt.

- Mobs spawn 25+ blocks away from you
- Water/Drowning kills best: no items lost, like in lava.
- Mobs spawn upto 80 blocks away (Make your spawn zone 25-80, each direction, max).
- Mobs spawn in dark places below a certain light level. Build your trap, then take all the torches down. Make a roof or make it underground for 24/7 spawning.
- Mobs spawn in X Y and Z direction, so if you want to be scrupulous, clear the caves out below, and keep them well lit so to avoid spawning away from your trap area.
- Water works well to drag the mobs to the kill zone. Saving you having to lure them in. Use 1x or 2x wide canals, and make them preferably 2 deep to prevent them escaping.
- Water needs to drop a block level after 8 (new block on 9), before a new water can be added, otherwise the water stops flowing. As such, traps can start getting quite high**

** I built mine above ground, and so had to build the whole thing in the air. Around the edges it was about 20 blocks up. I suggest building INTO the ground. I have also used an OBSCENE amount of blocks. I literally have ran out.

Here's a map of the one I'm working on. Don't use mine as a guide though, it's incomplete and could be done better. But it does give you an idea. I only made 3 sides 65, because my house etc was too close, and quite frankly, I don't have a life time to spend on this!

Oh yeah, and I wrote spawn in the middle, I meant to write "Collection Plate", Where your items end up after being sucked in.

As you can see, I did mine at a 65 block range. When completed, you will get alot of items anyway, so even 50 is fine. 80 (Max optimal, is just insane and unnecessary). One side is completed. and because its above ground, I have 100s of torches littered underneath the thing, to force spawns on top.

I'm also trying to make use of the corners, which I haven't worked out yet. It's a nightmare trying to link water to a diagonal sloping aqua duct. I tried it and it's just not viable.

Or video (make it 50x50, not 75x75, he suggests this in part 2, haha). This is a very efficient way but more time consuming.

Basically, there's quite a few designs that work, use what you like best.

Here's some pics of mine so far.

Pro Tip: Open your inventory, then you can alt-tab to another application, like Firefox, and the game wont pause. Just learnt this. Useful for passing time whilst waiting for day, or waiting in your spawn kill pit for items.

Good to know, think I might pick minecraft back up and make a simple monster trap. Any suggestions for a smaller scale one to just get some items while starting up?

Also, can you still boost minecarts?

You could still build the actual trap, however you'd have to lure mobs in yourself, as opposed to having an automated one. Automated ones only really work, because they net a large area. If you only had a few canals, you'd barely get anything.

Here is the trap I use. It's pretty good, and can kill all mobs, whilst sparing their loot.

Comprising of a cube, surrounded by water, that drags mobs down until they drown. Inside, behind the glass, the items collect into the middle. I suggest digging into the ground for this appropriately, because otherwise, you have to build a new level floor. In this video, he leaves on space form the ground, then 2 glass, then 2 rock, that's then sand, THAT's level, so dig 5 down, in a relatively flat area.

As for Boosters, yeah, however I have only played a week, so not sure what they used to be like. I do know changes have been made and they don't work quite the same as they did. Here's a great video for what is currently the best booster: "the Smart Booster". It can propel the cart over 5000 tracks with a person in!

It also explains how to automate it, so that it resets itself every so often, so that the perpetual carts don't stop moving, meaning you could then wire it up to release a cart to your destination, like a train station. You also learn how to make a 5 pulse timer/counter for the reset. Meaning the train, has to hit a button 5 times before it resets.

Lastly, a great way to get items is from mob spawners underground in the caves. They only ever have Zombies, Spiders and Skeletons, though, meaning no Creepers which drop Sulpher for TNT. You can build a similar water trap for those. Oh, he has built it quite big, you can down size it, like I did. Just follow the principle that there needs to be 1 gap under the glass and 2 rows of water behind it. You could use 3 rows of glass probably.

Baring in mind for all of these traps, you need to be present, or fairly close by. Unfortunately you can't leave it to milk itself all day while you're off mining somewhere lol.

Making a new post incase you're already reading that, but I made one moidifcation to the first trap.

At the bottom, I hollowed out some more blocks, added sand to the centre and added a cactus. This is because last night, I went afk down there when I went to bed, and I woke this morning to death by pigs. They are the only ones that can squeeze through that 1 gap in the glass, and I had so many down there that I glitched and died from crushing or something. This cactus, as far as I can tell over the last hour, eliminates this issue.

This means however, that you need to walk around the whole cactus block to collect loot.

50th edit...

You may also want to add something like this if you're luring mobs in...

A door, followed by a pressure plate inside. So you run upto the door from the outside, open it, and run in. The plate will auto shut the door for you. Useful for blocking enemies that are close.

Hey, everyone! Got bored the last few days, did some experimenting in Minecraft. Haven't actually tried playing with monsters or anything, mostly just getting my bearings in the game as a whole. Here's a few screenies:
