Those wholes are "unrendered chunks." The server will fail to send your client the data on one (or more) of the chunks of the map and it will look empty to the client.

Pain in the butt when this used to happen...

I usually just re-log and they go away but sometimes they get so frequent that its annoying.
No way to get rid of them..All you can do is relog.
There more frequent with the new 1.3 update, hopefully he optimizes it soon..
Minecraft servers have been buggy and laggy ever since the new update.

Anyone getting constant crashing with the downloaded version of the game since patch 1.3+ came out? I can only play about 2-10mins at a time before it just crashes out. I have tried both vanilla minecraft and some of the texture packs. No luck with either.

I can play in the browser just fine.
