I find it faster it to just go on to the next tree and don't worry about the ones with a lot of wood blocks up high.
Stone axe with your own tree farm is very efficient in my opinion.

That page explains everything you need to know...
1. Open space 8 blocks high (ceiling at 9th block) prevents branches from growing.
2. one torch surrounded by four saplings (one per side) prevents grown trees from blocking torch-light from other saplings.

You don't have to be that precise with the setup other than the ceiling height if you don't care about spacing. The farms are way faster at gathering wood to so have fun!

Make sure to have space around the outside of the trees though or something you can walk through blocking leaf growth because the leaves get annoying. I even get blocked at times when I'm a block away. It seems like the tree grows and wants to place leaves but can't so it waits till there is space and takes over the holes I try to make to get through them.

That is basically it.

Make a nice sized room around the mob spawner then make a waterfall going down..(Basically the water sucks them down and drowns them, they cannot get back because of their AI.The items get transported below the glass to you. .
