For you guys running servers, what's the best sever tools? I'm trying to create a LAN server. I tried Bukkit and tried some plugins. But got confused. Even after reviewing the tutorials over and over.

I tried a wrapper. Even more confusing because I could connect with a mod. But not a wrapper. Sigh.

bukkit is simply the best choice right now. I recommend test a lot with friends on your own home server. Too many people get into running server with little knowledge. Read the bukkit forums.
You need the best mixture between versions and plugins.

In singleplayer survival, personally I think iron is more than common enough, considering you should only use iron pickaxes to mine special ores such as redstone, gold and the like until you get a diamond one.

I use stone picks for stone and coal, iron for ores and minerals. When I get a diamond pick I still use stone picks for stone, but I use the diamond axe for all minerals and ores.

Edit; In short,

Management is a huge part of minecraft, but with that OCD attitude comes worse buildings.

Well, it's not a server for friends though. It's more of just a server for me and my brother. While the stock server is great, the commands lack. I'm looking just to be able to do something like. /i tnt 64

YES! I agree. I have found more iron near gravel and under seas but still....

OK so what's your secret? I am very conservative with my tools and armor yet I can't seem to amass anywhere near enough iron to build minecarts and track let alone iron doors. Is there a secret to finding larger veins of iron? or just luck of the draw? or is there some breakthrough threshold I have to pass?

Love this Game!

Greetz
I just yesterday launched my Minecraft server on Slackware Linux. It is a rather ancient box but an actual server mobo (socket 370 SuperMicro w/ 6 Gigs RAM) and it was incredibly easy once I remembered to tell ppl to add the uncommon port addy

I installed just the most basic Slack install which comes with Java 1.6 and was really pleased to see I could run minecraft server right from the initial command line. It uses so few resources for the OpSys the game just r0x!

So I am considering building a LiveCD version based on Slax-Remix becuse it comes with persistence allowing the use of a USB thumbdrive where one can add stuff like mods and plugins and still be amazingly efficient and fast. The idea would be to boot to a command line where one would type "setup" which would allow anyone to edit "server.properties" to suit your needs, save, and then type "minecraft" and KaBlammo! custom server that will run on almost anything.

With all my projects it might take me a month so I'd like to hear how many ppl might be interested in such a thing.

Basically mining in caves.
Hit the bottom layer go up 10-12 layers and just mine; have your sound on!
You'll hear monsters or water while mining, try to find where they are and you'll find a cave..It takes about 1-5 minutes for me to find a cave.Just keep mining on that layer and you will easily get resources..Gold, Diamond, iron, coal, lapiz, all you can think of except red stone. You get an, ok amount of red stone.Unless you do a lot of red wiring, you'll be fine though.
