It got better some with armor and bows but I still hate those boogers, especially when they sneak up on my back.
You just need to be more alert. See a vein, check the corners, drop some torches, and mine a couple, peek behind your, finish up and move on.

also pressing F3 will show your coordinates for mining purposes.
Also give the coordinates (at least in SP) of the baddies, which ruins it.

I'm still pretty new at this.
Would anyone mind inviting me to their server?
I'd recommend (even though I haven't been there in a long time) Sgt Spike's server @ play.minecraft.cc (forums at minecraftcc.com)

Does that work in multiplayer? I'd love a top down map just to help with navigating a few areas and check out how the stuff I do effects a top down view.

Please forgive the blatant title but exactly the reason I asked was to compare worlds since I've only played two plus free (no enemies). He says he never gets sneak attacked and I do a lot. This no longer happens much in a fairly wide area around my homebase since I have traps, extensive fencing, plus walls and moats and harvest trees before they get big within the protected area.

I have lost complete sets of diamond tools and weapons more than once to those green raht bastids as well as considerable amounts of minerals and products. It does seem that a threshold has been reached just recently due to three things

1) I now wall off unexplored areas while I work with dirt blocks and setup path markers with signs and other labels

2) Accumulating sufficient iron armor to always be fully protected and listening for the hiss before the bang so I can jump away means I don't die, just lose half of my hp.

3) Bows with LOTS of arrows kills the ones I see. Turning around all the time is just a pita and severely decreases efficiency resulting in low yields per hour, the original question.

His answer seems to indicate he is just really lucky or playing on "peaceful" since he has both lots of resources and few enemies.

Despite the drawbacks my world is getting WAY cool! and I am slowly accumulating iron but still don't see how I can gain enough to do the extensive minecart tracks I see.
Ima keep pluggin' away though. I am hopelessly addicted.

If you want to keep from being sneak attacked I suggest using torches like crazy. Works well for me. The simplest way to get lots of torches is to use charcoal instead of coal so the whole process can boil down to the renewable tree resources.

When I go cave mining I just run through spewing torches all over and kill whatever mobs I come up on. If you go well past where you will be mining there won't be any spawns close enough to find you. Then once you get towards the end of where you set up torches you just repeat the torch/kill process and head deeper.

On my solo map I build a 4 block high wall (completely surrounding the area) with torches all over the inside and the outside of the wall and I've never had a mob show up inside. Unless you count passive mobs because I get loads of those. The only thing to worry about then is if there is a creeper outside your outer wall door if you head out or possibly spiders since they can apparently climb walls but none have yet on my solo server. One climbed and attacked me on my 11 block high 1 block high wall I was working on yesterday though since I was too lazy to put torches anywhere.

If that's all you see in a game then I'm confident Minecraft isn't for you.

There's tremendous value in this game, and it's unbelievably addictive. I frequently swear off Minecraft, but every little taste of the game has led to another 8+hr marathon. Do a youtube search for "Minecraft Survivor Island" and be prepared to laugh your ass off.
