Nope, you can do it single player.
%Appdata%, then .minecraft, then you should see saves.(I can't remember, but it's in that file)
Then just plop the custom map you downloaded in there, and wa lah.

yeah i wished that worked...

in other news... had a great set up going... exploring miles and freaking miles of this cavern with lava, diamond..some red block, iron..tons of awesome crap. a house, a tower... gosh it was great..

then i died in lava... spawned back in the original spot who knows where.... and cant find my place again..... freaking sucks

Go download Cartographer and map make an image of your map. Should give you at least an idea.

That could work. Or just try to keep track of what direction your going. The clouds always move North.

good hint with the clouds....but i was underground 90% of the time lol.

the worlds are just so huge...very bothersome when you find something truly valuable and it is a 10 minute hike from the original spawnpoint
