Can i safely UNDERclock?

Thread Starter
OK everyone, my usual motherboard is destroyed right now, and to get my gaming fix in I'm thinking of putting my 2.8G pentium 4 (socket 478) with 800fsb onto a p4 motherboard with only 400/533 fsb.

I did this for about a day last month, everything seemed fine though my cpu only ran 1.8G (instead of 2.8). I have no problem with this loss and can deal with it until i get a new motherboard...

Will this hurt my parts? do i need to slow down my cpu clock to match the slower mother board?

I wouldn't want to do that, if I were you. Having a chip running below (waaaay below) stock specs would be just as bad as running a at a temp. processor waaay over what it can handle.

I like to think of it as forgetting to change the gear and hearing that screeching sound in a manual-gear car.

Underclocking from What i know Overall doesnt damage your hardware but A huge underclock may strain it a little as you are undervolting..Its hard to understand but would be nice to know an official answere to this.

what % should i slow the processor down to in my bios to make it match up with the motherboard?

zipnogg: would slowing the cpu bus down still cause it to overwork?

Underclocking won't hurt anything. Hell every time my cpu usage drops below 40% my clock drops to 880Mhz. That car analogy doesn't apply to computers.

Under clocking will not hurt it, but if it works in that motherboard then its a matter of seting it up, unless its a mobile then some motherboards don't see them right.
