PS - any of you know how i can check how many KwHrs my computer uses per month? that way i can figure out if I can afford my electric bill starting next month.
I purchased a Kill-A-Watt unit. Plugged my whole UPS into the tester and ran it for 24hours. It will tell you how many KW's your rig used for one day. Multiply * 30 for the month. It will scare you.

It's around 2.5KW/day. Or 75KW/month. If I remember correctly. But, I am running a uber wimpy GPU. That would significantly raise the power consumption if I was running a 7900 or 8800 GTX.

Oh noes! I'm running a 7900GT and 7950GX2 in my Conroes. What is considered a whimpy GPU? Would a PCI video card be a better choice over a PCI-E voltage wise?

I've lost a couple WU's as well lately. I was shocked that we made 1st place.

Well, the GX2 is probably using as much power as the rest of your computer. It's probably pulling 100watts/hour idle. When it's running at full power it might pull 200+watts/hour. Bringing your computer up to around 200KW per month. It's like leaving three 100 watt lightbulbs on 24 hours a day. Where I live, that equals about 60$ a month.

OMG

Wow, that's incredible, don't let my wife know! Thanks for the info Franken. I can see I need to make one rig for gaming only and not for 24/7 folding.

My 550w PSU seems to have enough power so far with my X2-3800 @ 1.4v. I wonder if it will be enough power when I put an OC'd Quad in it? I better get looking for a low volt GPU, my folding rig only has a 400w PSU and the quad might not work with the 7900GT in it.

I'm running my OCed quad on a 430 Watt PSU with no troubles at all. Once you take a power hungry GPU out of the mix, the newer CPU are very energy efficient in relation to their computing power.

Thanks Taeric

My 6200LE should work fine with the 400w PS then, it just has passive cooling too. I'll find out in a couple of weeks.

I checked the power consuption chart and it says 143w loaded for my GX2 and only 50w on the 7900GT. A real waste of electricity for folding but for gaming my GX2 is worth every watt.

Time to make some changes for sure. Thanks guys!
