You'd take a performance hit in VMWare. Fedora has built in support for XEN, another Virtualization tool, but I think to use it you need to have a clean disk, install fedora, and then the Virtualization tool in fedora would let you isntall windows.

Any virtualization where you're splitting 2 cores for 2 OS's as opposed to 2 cores for one OS and you're going to take a hit... but then again it might not be that bad.... there are disscussioins on Hardforum and Stanfords Folidng Forum too

I just run Fedora 24/7.

VMWARE runs on Windows XP as an OS emulator. You can run a virtual Fedora core on VMWARE while you run other XP applications.

You know the power supplies which come with USB hubs, cell phones, etc? They are small black bricks which plug into the wall? Some of them run at 12V. The pump runs at 12V also. So, you can offload the pump wattage onto an external, small, power supply cheaply. I keep all my old "wallwarts" just in case I need this type of thing

ok, so would i need to splice the wires or does the pump have a connector on it for this kind of thing? lol... I know I'm a pain in the arse...

oh... and runnign it in VM seems like it'd use a lot of processing power taking away from folding? I dunno just seems that way to me...

That and running a 64bit os in a 32 bit environment doesn't play nice... from what I've heard. It works, but that's about all you can say for it.

You could splice a "male" molex plug (standard 4 pin power connector on a PSU) onto the wallwart and plug in your water pump normally. You just need to pay attention to the polarity of the wallwart wires. Keep in mind the black wires on the PSU are ground and the yellow wires are +12.

The polarity of the wallwart PS is usually stamped on the wallwart sticker. It looks like a "O" with a "." in the center. The "." is called the "tip". The "tip" is the inside of the circular plug. So, the "O" and the "." will be diagrammed on the walwart (usually). You can send me a pic of the walwart sticker if you are confused.

Yeah, you would not gain much speed running a VMWARE session...but you could gain insight on how it works and determine if you are willing to make the commitment. Sounds like you need your PC for other Windows things though, so I wouldn't bother.

Gah, everyone is upgrading to fold more. If franken gets 1900xtx, then i can fold on one core instead of two and let you have extra slot with GPU folding. I cannot transfer to linux because a lot of programs I run, like Matlab, might not have linux support. AH, maybe after winter break and when i have time, ill consider it. This is such a hassle. F@H should just let the gromacs be 1000 pointer each, then we will even everything out and i wouldn't have to think about all these.

I just thought maybe i should get X1900, and use that as 100% folding and use my 7900GT as gaming.

Would that actually work? I am running on NF4 ultra-d so i don't have SLI. but having ATI and Nvidia don't sound so nice.

Ignore GPU folding until the bugs are worked out...that's the message I'm getting. Also, since you are running a multi-purpose rig, I would focus on memory/CPU upgrades if you want more folding speed. When you have the mulah to do so that is.
