WC build log for my rig

Thread Starter
As many of you know, I've been wanting to upgrade to wc for a while and have been trying to put together a cheap setup. Well, I may be able to do it sooner than I had initially planned.

Here is what I may end up with steveo42024's stuff here

cpu block: used DD TDX or Swiftech Apogee - would like some opinions on this.
gpu block: polarflo tt - have
rad: 77 bonneville heatercore w/dd shroud - prob get from steveo42024
pump: either Eheim 1048 or Hydor L35 (used from steveo42024) would like opinions on this
res: clear dd 5/14 bay - prob get from steveo42024
fluid: zerox or mct40 - would also like opinions on this
tubing: from steveo42024, but I may get some masterkleer so I have all the lengths I need. is masterkleer pvc? is it too thin? will I experience water evaporation with it?

how does this look? I'm not sure how I'm going to mount the heater core. does anyone have any tips for mounting it on the back of my case?
this is my case

Look at post #5 to see what I for sure am getting and to see my questions. Thanks guys!

mounting on the back would be tricky as the heater core is large, it would cover your rear panel for sure.

I think the most common is an external box, or like I am going to try, making a custom box to mount it to the top, running the lines down through the top panel.

yeah, that's what I'm worried about. I would eventually like to get a tripple rad and mount it on top of my case, so I don't want to mod the top at this point.

or, I was doing some math and bc I ended up getting the eheim pump for cheap on ebay would it be better to do this setup:

apogee block
swiftech tripple rad
masterkleer tubing 10'
fillport
all from jab-tech shipped for 126.46
then add the eheim 1048 pump
polarflo tt gpu block
another thermaltake thunderblade 120mm fan (already have 2) 8.13 shipped from svc.com
misc fittings from homedepot - t and hose clamps (or zip ties)

so this setup would cost me about $135-145, maybe a little less if I get a used tdx block

or, the original setup I listed would cost me about the same and I'd have an extra pump I could sell, so it would probably be maybe about $100 if I could sell that pump.

now, which setup would be better and if I go the 2nd route would that eheim 1048 be powerful enough? It's supposed to be a good pump, but will it do all that?

looking for suggestions and tips here people.

Alright for an update:

I am getting Steveo's stuff he's giving me a good deal and I'm going to send him payment tomorrow morning.

just some updates on other things:
I contacted the ebay seller for the pump and they are either going to get UPS to return the pump to them and refund my money or give me a partial refund so I'll get the Eheim 1048 for less, or maybe they'll take it back and give me a 1250 or 1260 for the same price... idk. they seem nice. gotta love when sellers make mistakes on their listings

so this is what I'll have for a setup:
CPU block: I think I want a Apogee
gpu block: polarflo tt
pump: hydor L35 for sure, maybe a Eheim pump... whatever if I end up w/ 2 I'll probably just sell one of them
rad: dual heater core w/ dd shroud.
fans: I think I'll use 2 tt thunderblade fans to keep the noise down
rez: dd single bay
tubing: probably 10' of masterkleer 7/16 ID

now for my questions:
first, I was thinking about trying to mount my rad on the back of my case with a swiftech radbox. the new version says its good for tripple rads... is the old version? Since the radbox mounts to the 120mm fan it should in theory work. any ideas on this?

waterblock: I was looking at either a tdx or a apogee. I hear the apogee is better, but how much better? if i can get a tdx for say 10-15 less would it be worth it?

liquid: I would like blue uv liquid, the problem is that being my first wc setup I'm a bit nervous about spills (I don't want to fry my system) I got some MCT40 off ebay for like $15 shipped, but then I realized that it is green. so what would be good liquid that would be non-conductive and blue? how is this stuff?
http://www.xoxide.com/primoice-nonco...id-uvblue.html
or how about this stuff? and does anyone know what color it is?
http://www.frozencpu.com/ex-liq-01.html

and finally, jab-tech seems to be the only place to get masterkleer tubing from and has a good price on the apogee block, but I've never ordered from there. can anyone share some experiences? If I order from them I may also get an evercool cooler for my NF4 chipset... might as well get something better while I have my mobo out of the case

all opinions and help here are appreciated!

I had a rad cable tied to the back of a case once and it seemed to do well, now I have got another case dedicated to radiators. It all looks good from here mate, watercooling is pretty easy stuff when you have done it once Lots of playing around with the rad should result in different performance. Experiment and enjoy For me watercooling has led to using peltiers and I have learnt that a good water cooling rig is worth its weight in gold. When using TEC's there is a hell of a lot of heat generated and rad placement and good flow is paramount, along with a good pump and block.

I'm reading your post and i want to let you no that it's a good thing your doing here. Building logs are great to read. Also love the fact that your going to W/C.

You will get a great increase of performance going to water.

And to help out a fello O/C'r i am offering a DD fan shroud if you want it?

So let me no and also will keep on reading this thread in case you run into problems that i may be able to help you with.

hey, thanks for the input and the encouragement!

I ordered a swiftech radbox rev 2 from performance pcs-com. I would have gotten it from frozencpu, but they were more and I'd have to pay tax. since it mounts to the fan I figure I should be able to make it work w/ a dual heater core. (I hope!)

I think I'll get a swiftech apogee, I pm'd transonic but haven't heard back about his used tdx... so I may have to buy new. I'm thinking jab-tech bc they have masterkleer tubing. I like that it is 7/16" ID which isn't small enough to really restirct flow, but it will fit tighter over th barbs.

does anyone have any suggestions for fluid? like I said I have some MCT40, but I think it's green.... dd just says that it will glow... lol whatever that means. I can't just add die to that can I? although... blue and green together prob wouldn't look good
