Best Heatsink/Fan for Athlon 64 socket 754

Thread Starter
I have an amd athlon 64 3400+ running at 2.5ghz with an aftermarket gigabyte fan. it was nothing special just got it coz it was cheap. I am wondering what is the best heatsink/fan for a socket 754 cpu so I can replace it and hopefully oc it some more?

ummm is your fan crapped out???

cause I'd recommend replacing your mobo not your fan....well...maybe fan too

I briefly had that mobo until I found that you cant lock the agp/pci bus speeds. (u aint gonna be able to increase fsb before mobo becomes unstable)

I'd recommend getting a DFI Lanparty or at least something that has locked pci/agp bus.

my ASUS K8N was pretty cheap and is a good board but yourt fsb is limited to 300MHz.....but I guess if u gonna use x10 mult that shouldnt be a problem.

EDIT: as far as heatsink and fans go.....the big typhoons seem to be popular and regularly get recommended. they are about $65-$75 here in aus

you should get a tt big typhoon i hear good things about it..haha or watercooling wich is great for overclocking..but i agree with TedSexington on the mobo replacement get something with a locked agp/pci bus you can really push that cpu far with the right cooling and mobo..thats my problem as the matter of fact with my cpu i cant push it farther right now because my mobo becomes VERY unstable but i could get GREAT clocks at it with a great mobo

Cool thanks for the info. it seems i should maybe look at getting a new mobo as well. all i have to do is convince this wife to be that we should spend money on a new mobo cpu cooler instead of baby food and nappies!!!

lol I have that same problem....wife and 2 kids.

you'll prob do ok getting mobo first and then later getting the cooler.....especially seeing as though we are going into winter.

the DFI board is about $159 or so (at least, it is at my supplier here in Brisbane)

the ASUS K8N from the same supplier is $99.

I'm happy with my ASUS board but it would be nice to have the option of running higher than 300MHz...seeing as though I can run stable at 2.55GHz (300x8.5)......if you were going to use x9 or x10 mults then 300MHz should be plenty with your Athlon.

It looks like a new mobo should be first then. considering my options are very limited with a k8v800m from gigabyte. good board is you don't want to do anything with it.

I got lucky with mine...I installed and tried to overclock my stuff straight away......when I found I couldnt get my machine past 2GHz, I checked out these forums and found I needed to lock my pci/agp bus....so for the next 2 days went through my mobo manual etc but fouind nothing so I took it back....they were going to exchange but they had very limited choices for s754 mobos and I'd already bought my Sempron cpu so I got a refund and went to a different supplier and got the ASUS.
