Thread Starter
would a 3800 X2 be better to get over the intel 920? i want a cpu that does extremely well in games, btu i also want a good multitasker for dvd decoding and video conversion, or should i just wait to get an AM2 b/c i really like ddr2 over ddr

I hate to say this but X2 3800 is better than Intel 920 @ stock!

Quote:
Pentium D 920 and Pentium D 930 can only prove faster than Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (the youngest dual-core processor from AMD) in office applications and selected synthetic benchmarks. That is why the only way Pentium D can become popular is due to its $60 lower price than that of Athlon 64 X2 3800+.

Right now I'd say just wait for AM2.Also DDR and DDR2 have no performance differences between currect amd and intel. But for gaming I would reccomend AMD because of the onboard memory controller. Things are just going to move to fast in the next couple of months that it's really pointless to build a new system.

always figured there was a difference between ddr and ddr2, but if theres no difference then why is amd coming out the AM2 to support ddr2 if there no performance increas?

Anyway Pentium D 920 overclocks like crazy \\/ (pauldovi may have something to say - his 920 is running @ 4.7Ghz )

Quote:
For dual core entry-level products we see the situation like this: The X2 3800+ runs faster in gaming than a Pentium D 920. In applications both processors run neck-to-neck with a slight advantage for the 3800+. On the other hand a Pentium D 920 is between 15% and 20% cheaper and overclocks clearly better: We achieved with air-cooling a 45% frequency increase and believe that 40% (or around 3900 MHz) are achievable with almost every air-cooled 920. Overclocked to its maximum stable frequency we found the 920 outrunning a maxed out X2 3800+ in almost all benchmarks.

As of now there is no performance increases. Once AMD moves to DDR2 the bandwidth will increase. Thats all DDR2 is. Increased bandwidth. So once everyone is onboard the improvements can begin like having better timings.

I run my 920 at 4.48. I can play BF2 on all max settings and fold on both cores at the same time. I would go with the 920, and anyone who says the 3800+ is better is ignorant. Don't say, "Ya! but the 3800+ is better stock," THIS IS OC.NET, NOWON RUNS AT STOCK!

Edit... BTW the 3dmark06 score is at 4.5Ghz. 3dmark06 will not run stable at 4.7Ghz. I believe it is a memory issue, not a CPU issue.

Hey, that 920D is looking sweet! That may have to be my next cpu! I dunno though.

How high can it be overclocked with a big typhoon as cooling?
