Intel 2.4C vs 3.0E

Hello everyone!

This is my first post on overclock.net and found your forums very useful
The question i wanted to pose to you was the following:

Which processor am i likely to get the greatest performance?
I currently run a 3.0E prescott using the kit detailed in my sig. At the moment that processor is running very hot (Idle 50*C/ 100% Load 67*C) at an operating frequency of 3.3Ghz. Im not willing to oc it any further without decent cooling, even then i doubt il get more than 3.6ghz.

I know prescotts are very hot running esp the C0 stepping on this chip.

My current idea is to replace the Prescott with a 2.4C, Northwood M0 stepping. What is the likely max oc i could expect from this chip.

Based on the info i have managed to get from this forum i can see that those 2.4c's seem to hit about 3.5ghz or so

Anyway this post is dragging so:

2.4c OR 3.0E (ie keep current chip) what would you go for and why?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

You could just upgrade your heatsink for a lot less money and get a ton more performance. You lose Hyper-Threading if you go to the 2.4c, and as you can see by my rig, you can still get really high clocks with low temps. I idle at 28C and load at 47C.
EDIT: After looking at your specs (you should fill out the system specs in the User CP) I saw you have a Zalman HSF, you should try to re-seat that because you should not be getting those temps with that HSF.

How would you loose HT if you went to a 2.4c? You do know the 2.4C is an 800mhz CPU with Hyper Threading right?? Well now you do.

Oops I always get that confused with the 2.4a.

I had a 3Ghz Prescott before, and on the stock heatsink I didn't hit 67c at full load.

Are you using Arctic Silver 5 for the thermal compound? (I have signitures turned off as I surf from work and have to be careful)

I would recomend using AS5, reseating your heatsink and maybe taking a look at your case airflow to be sure you have enough airflow.

Thanks guys for your VERY quick replys!

Yeah i will update my sig so its inline with the forum, oops!

il give you a bit more info about the system

The cpu temps are as stated above but the case ambient temps are really low about 28*C, the mosfets are about 40*C this is at 3.3Ghz not stock. (stock voltage btw) this is using AS5 as well.

I have tried reseating the heat sink before as those temps shocked me as well

I get a feeling the temp diodes on this board are inaccurate as well

What sort of oc limit can you expect from a C0 revision (the first revision)

Im at a bit of a loss really...... i did hope to get more out of it than this

What frequency are you running your cpu at?

Edit: I just think i might have a bad overclocker

Are you running it on a divider or 1:1?

What revision chip have you got?

Thanks again
