Using a PS3 with a computer monitor

Thread Starter
Hey guys.

I plan on getting a PS3 soon, but I do not have an HDTV yet. My plan is to use an HDMI to DVI cable to connect it to my PC monitor, then use a USB adapter for sound. Only problem is, I don't want to have to switch the cables on my monitor whenever I want to switch from PS3 to PC and vice versa. I have found DVI y-splitters, so I can connect both output sources to my monitor, but how would I go about switching the sources on my monitor?

Thank you.

i have the same set up as you describe but i have a monoprice 3hdmi spliter (1 input and 3 outputs)
I think you would have to change sources via the computer screen no matter what.
I Dont know if you mean, you want to display both sources at same time?
I switch sources by a remote (output channel #1 is pc, output channel #2 is ps3, and 3rd not in used)

I hope you don't mind me butting in, but I've been wondering the same question, but I just guesed that will depend on the Y-Splitter and if it offers options to switch between what to display. Does your monitor only have 1 connector? If it doesn't you can use the other for the PS3 and then switch between the output from the display.

This

However; your monitor must be htpc(?) compliant.

My Monitor has speakers and HDMI so it works with my PS3 just fine. If you don't have that, use either a optical->3.5mm Adapter, or a splitter. I think the adapter will be cheaper.

My monitor only has one DVI input, so I'm wondering if there's a way to switch between my PC and PS3 without physically switching the cables every time.

I'm not worried about sound, it's the video.

I'm using this one right now

to hook up my ps3 to my monitor. (comp is using vga)

for audio though, Im using an old sony stereo that takes in composite audio and gives out 3.5mm analog audio.

maybe this will work..

using this one to hook up the 3.5mm adapter that posted and the audio that comes from the ps3.
4-year build.

since your monitor only has one dvi input then just get this:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2
Ps3 (hdmi) to splitter; PC (hdmi (or dvi convert to hdmi)) to splitter; For output, it would have to be hdmi to dvi convert

i recommend looking on ebay, i got mine for $20 instead of $50

I have been wondering this same thing myself. Any way to use your pc speakers/sound card to render sound for the ps3 connected to your monitor?

Can anyone please point me to the right direction? my speaker set up its a asus xonar d2x hooked up to a old altec lansing 5.1 system. All my speakers are connected to the sound card, any way to have ps3 play sound also from speakers?

do i "have" to get a receiver for this?

Yes, I do. HDMI to HDMI Switch for the video. Then I use the PS3's component cable and an adapter from Red/White to 3.5mm stereo jack and plug that into the Line-In on my computer's sound card. Make sure Line-in isn't muted or has low volume and enjoy. (Downside: Your computer must be on to hear anything. Not a problem for me, but just a warning.)
