onboard sound crap out?

ok so i had my comp on listning to music, I walk away for a half hour
and when I come back, i have no more audio device attached to my computer
says the audio device controller in windows
it IS enabled in bios, i checked

i recently installed one of those all-in-one ghetto 3rd party codec kits
it was viris free with avast, as far as I know

how can should I just get a new card? or try to fix the onboar somehow
and im NOT reinstalling windows

no driver updates
and i did roll back drivers

but last night i installed somethink like the Gordian Knot Codec Pack
and i think that might of killed it
ive uninsatlled and deleted everything from that, and it still doesnt work

Reboot, remove it in the BIOS.
Reboot/ shut down.
Reboot reEnable in BIOS.
Reboot, reload drivers as necessary.
Wow, that a 4 legged boot

Hope that works.
Also... see if there are any updated drivers @ mfg.

There are plenty of good cheep cards w/5.1 or 7.1 sound.
Having a card takes some load off the CPU too!

BTW, you should be able to close your own thread with the "Thread Tools"... I can't close, it's not my section.

Onboard sound is just to say that there's a sound output device, like onboard video, it's just to say that you can get a picture.

If we talk about sound quality :
-It's often based on AC'97 standards : noisy and bad sounding.
-There is lots of noise from other motherboard components, because mobo designers never thought about filtering the power input of the chip.
-They're often cheapo codecs.
-They eat lots of CPU and features often require a background prog eating 20MB of RAM.
-Unreliable as you noticed.

$5 soundcards are about the same, but they can be changed if they turn bad.
