BOINC: What & Why

Thread Starter
What Is BOINC?

BOINC stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, and it is an open source program that allows users to assist non-commercial research via grid computing.

Basically, BOINC is a client that you run on your computer, which then connects to non-commercial research projects and downloads tasks - called work units - that need to be computed.

The easiest way to understand what BOINC is, is to think of Folding@Home, which in itself is a client that connects to and runs the folding@home project - BOINC is similar, although instead of only running the single project, it allows users to select from an array of projects from various different fields.

This then allows BOINC users to choose projects they are interested in, or have a connection to.

The projects range from protien folding (like F@H), to mapping of the stars, to research into diseases (like cancer, HIV/AIDS, mallaria, leukemia, etc), to complex math and science.

There are sure to be at least a few projects that will appeal to most, so have a read through the list and find the ones that appeal to you - the list can be found HERE.

A few other things worth mentioning:
  • BOINC includes proper support for ATI Stream/OpenCL enabled GPUs, so ATI GPUs now perform as expected
  • BOINC supports CUDA enabled nVidia GPUs
  • BOINC has a built in WU buffer
  • BOINC has a user friendly client interface with simple/advanced view to suit different users
  • BOINC includes more adjustable settings for user, project, client, CPU and GPU

Why should I BOINC?
  • Perhaps you are interested in space, or science, or maths
  • perhaps you just leave your PC on a lot when it is doing nothing and you think it could be doing something more then just idling
  • Perhaps you are a giver, and want to give back to society for the benefits and blessings you have received in your life
  • Perhaps you have friends or family that have been stricken by uncurable diseases or have passed away as a result of one of those diseases and you want to help find a cure
  • Or perhaps you just want to join the OCN team and compete for #1 spot
In the end, the why is really up to you

What next?

If you are keen to BOINC, read the BOINC Essentials thread HERE.

If you are not, then cheers for reading anyhoo

Peace.

You may also want to elaborate on BOINC vs F@H. For example: Unlike F@H, BOINC has a built in WU buffer, proper support for ATI GPUs, neater client interface, more adjustable user settings, etc.
