Quake4 and FEAR using over 1GB Page File ?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, i have a problem with the page file at the moment.

Whenever i run games like Quake4 or FEAR, the page file usage gets upto 1GB or more....

I check my RAM mem usage in the task manager under processes, and the games only take up around 500MB, when i have 1GB RAM in my system.

Why doesnt the RAM get used up first, instead of the page file. I thought thats the purpose of the page file.... When physical RAM runs out, the page file on the hard drive is used up ?

But in this case the PF seems to be getting used up more than the Physical RAM installed.

Please help !

Set your PF to less then.

My computer > Properties > Advanced > Where it says performance, click settings > advanced tab > Virtual memory, and hit change.

Should help

Okay, i put it low to 1GB now and it still uses abt 900MB, and doesnt use all from thr physical RAM.

So i put the PF size down to 500MB, but now the games give an error saying virtual memory is low.

Why is it giving priority to VM when it should use the Physical RAM first, thats the weird part ?

I think it's normal, it used a LOT of memory, so to play fair, it used up all the page file it can beforehand, and reserved the physically to itself (load content from pagefile, generate new content etc...). Even when you alt-tabbing from your game to desktop, a huge amount of data is already transferred from RAM to PF.

Okay, well my mistake, i just checked using SandraSoft and during any of those games running, my physical memory free is about 5% so basically the game is in fact using all of that.

As for the page file i am still concerned because while running Quake4, the page file takes upto 1.8GB. I get this information from the task manager, where it says PF Usage.

Is this normal ?

Please advise, thanks

Games these days really utilize you Ram so once theres no Ram left it will start to use rather alot of page file..just asign 1.5x the amount of ram as your page file mate.

Okay guys, to make things a little clear, here is a screenshot of SandraSoft showing how much memory is being used while running F.E.A.R.

As you can see, there is still 784MB RAM free, and there is about 1GB of page file being used during the game.

What i don't understand is, why does the page file get used so much ? Shouldnt the main RAM be used up first ?

I have also attached another screenshot of what the memory looks like without running any games, just plain windows...

Everyone experiences this, except the people who set Page File to 0. You should try it since you have 2GB RAM.
