Quake4 and FEAR using over 1GB Page File ? - Page 2

Hows the game running? good? bad? If it runs good I wouldn't worry about it. There are spikes in RAM usage during gameplay that you can't measure.

hey, sry to interrupt ur thread but..in my task manager, if i add up all the mem usaged to the programs during a game or a mem intensive app, mem usage is only like 600MB and i have 1024, is there like something in the background thats using the other 400MB?

Well before i installed another gig of extra ram today, the games were stuttering.

Thank god this extra ram fixed it, now smooth play. It's not really effecting the performance of the games, i dont know but im curious as to why the system doesnt use the RAM first. I guess loading times may be effected by this huge page file, during games.

The problem is that if i disable page file, windows will not do that. If i set the initial and maximum to 0 it still uses a lot of page file. Thats another weird problem. At the moment i have 100 initial and 100 maximum set. But still the games dont stop using the page file.

Over 1GB of PF usage in games like FEAR, QUAKE4, COD2. I doubt its using my whole 2GB ram plus extra 1GB page file just for one game.... somethings not right !

Wait, so you tried to disable your page filing and it didn't let you....o_O
You have to reboot for it to take effect, but I'm sure that's not the problem. Open up task manager and check all the processes your running (organize the processes by user name). See what you're actually running. The only thing you need is explorer.exe and probably a firewall if you don't have hardware firewall. Anything else is probably hogging up stuff.

Edit\\\\ Have you 'optimised' your computer yet? ie. disable everything at start-up beside the things you absolutely need. That will keep things from eating up RAM too. As for the page filing, are you absolutely sure you did 'No page filing' and 'set', then reboot? Sorry to insulte your inteligence, but that's the only reason why Windowns wouldn't disable page filing.

Hey its okay lol, yea i had to restart the pc many times every time i changed the page file settings.

I disabled PF, yet still in task manager itll show up using 258MB being used, during startup of windows. During the games it goes above 1GB PF usage.

Dunno whats happening. Should i use some other figures to set in the page file settings ?

BollyRaja disable your pagefile if you can. I have only 1.5 gigs of ram and I have mine off and never run into problems playing FEAR or Quake 4. They both load much faster than when I had a pagefile. Wait are you actually setting it no page file or just reducing the numbers to zero?

yes the page file is at 0MB, but i can still see the Pf usage section in task manager showing 256MB being used by the page file.

Why it is still showing, is what i dont get. Is ur task manager showing any usage of the PF ?

Heres a screenshot of Sandra Showing page file being used too...

In Sandra i noticed the name of the page file, is given figures 2 50

those were my initial and maximum set before for the page files. If its at 0 now, shouldnt it be reading blank or 0 ?

I got what you're saying now!!!!
First of all, make sure it's off, not just at zero. But from your screenshot, it's correct.
Anyway, I finally understand you now. Like everyone else said, this is actually normal to have your task manager show page filing even when disabled. I'm taking a guess, but instead of page filing, it's showing how much RAM you're using. I'm constantly at 251 on idle, and around 500-600 in CoD2, so I'm just guessing that how much RAM it is, not actually page filing.

Yea but during any game, sandra will report as my RAM being used and how much the page file is being used.

For example, take a look at the screenshot during a game, it will show i have some RAM left from the 2GB being used.

On top of that it reports nearly 1GB of more PF being used. Surely one game cannot be using about 2GB ?
