Beauty... the last camera we got, I really wanted a dslr. My wife wanted a point-and-shoot... so we compromised and got a point-and-shoot...
Convince her (and I agree) that a compromise between a point and shoot and a DSLR is a digital rangefinder.

Produces the best quality images of any 35mm digital camera. Shame it's about £6,000 body only.

This is what we got:

$250cdn vs 6000 pounds?

See, they even look similar!

/sarcasm

DSLRs are nice, but most cameras can take excellent quality photos now. I remember when my school first got a digital camera. The medium it accepted was floppy disks. I think it had a 1MP sensor.

Edit: 1.3MP

Nice, I'm jelous. I had a little buyers remorse when I settled for the D3100 and almost exchanged it for a D7000 but I took a 2nd look at the price difference and decided I 'd be better off spending that on glass.

The glass thing is very true. The only reason i'm "upgrading" is for iso performance, a focus motor so i can use some of the lenses i have access to that are manual focus atm, and an aperture-feeler so it will auto-meter on those lenses too.

The image quality will only be marginally better than my 5000 anyway. It's more what you do with it than the quality.

Only thing is that I need to loan someone £1,000 that they just mentioned today. I'd gladly have waited to get the new camera until after than if i knew.

Edit: I have a WU that's stuck at:

"writing 100154052 bytes of core data to disk"
"... done"

Should I be worried?

Nice! I'm actually looking to pick up a D5100 myself. Make sure you tell me how that beauty performs

It did it after about 10 minutes

The 5100 has the same sensor as the 7000, which is said to have excellent ISO performance. It doesn't have enough buttons for my liking though.
