Fornay said on French radio that the PS3 will cost "around 500 euro [$613], in the range of 499 to 599 euro [$612 to 734]."
Ouch.. That'll have to be some heavy marketing to get those things to sell.

I did have plans on buying one when it is released, but $600! that is just Ridiculous. There are smashing a whole bunch of features into the ps3 that most people arent even going to use and then charging for them.

I didnt mean that all of the features are usless (some people will find them all usefull), I just meant that there are plenty of them that I would never use and therfor I shouldnt be charged for them. The thing has soooo many things maybe they should sell different versions for different people.

Oh, I know.

But Sony makes MS look like noobs on bundling.. Their players, their media readers, their.. Proprietary hell.

New notch for their belt if they can get everyone on blu-ray (probably the best thing that happened in the world - even though the format was inferior - was the adoption of VHS over Beta... And though I have no lost love on many of the other players in the field right now.. I hope Sony loses this one as well.)

I totally agree with you, MS completly sucks at bundling. They did a horrible job on X360.

I can never get 1up pages to load in a reasonable amount of time. Here is a link to a GameSpot article referring to what I think is the same quote: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6147148.html

Remember that post I made the other day about how Sony is the least tuned in to what customers actually want? Well Sony's comments in this article back that up strongly. Paraphrasing, "It's expensive for a game console, sure; but cheap for a Blu-Ray player." Um, reality check for the man: The Playstation 3 is, first and foremost, a game console to everyone on the planet except, apparently, Sony executives. So everyone except the Sony execs is going to think the PS3 is overpriced for what they're buying.

Even if the unit sells for only $550 or so in the US, that's still $150 more than the X360, and that's assuming there is no price drop by November! Now this Xmas, Average Joe Mom is going to see a $550 PS3 on the shelf next to a potentially $350-$375 X360...hmm, no brainer for Average Joe Mom!

Obviously Sony is trying to push the Blu-Ray format by banking that the "Playstation" brand has a slavishly loyal following that will spend 50% more (or can nag their overindulging parents into spending that money) just to get a PS3 instead of an X360. And if that were to happen, then Blu-Ray players would be in a majority of homes before HD-DVD ever gets any traction, so Sony would premptively win the format wars. Nice idea...until you remember that VHS beat the pants out of Beta precisely because it was significantly cheaper, despite being the inferior format. In general, people are more sensitive to price than brand loyalty; and Sony is at great risk of sacrificing the entire Playstation brand in an effort to push their optical disc format. Shame on you Sony, you've clearly lost your mind.

Well put Vulcan. I think a lot of people saw this coming, but didn't speculate because they wanted to see how high Sony was gonna push the price. I know personally I am not surprised in the least. Doesn't matter though in my case since I was planning to buy a Revolution and DS Lite. Maybe I can even justify upgrading my graphics card... I mean it would all come out to the same price as one PS3.

What I like about the PS3 is that you do not need propietary parts for it. Sony realized the plus of allowing for compatability with a wide variety of components. MS wants all the money for themselves, so you have to buy their crap.
