I can never get 1up pages to load in a reasonable amount of time. Here is a link to a GameSpot article referring to what I think is the same quote: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6147148.html
Remember that post I made the other day about how Sony is the least tuned in to what customers actually want? Well Sony's comments in this article back that up strongly. Paraphrasing, "It's expensive for a game console, sure; but cheap for a Blu-Ray player." Um, reality check for the man: The Playstation 3 is, first and foremost, a game console
to everyone on the planet except, apparently, Sony executives. So everyone except the Sony execs is going to think the PS3 is overpriced for what they're buying.
Even if the unit sells for only $550 or so in the US, that's still $150 more than the X360, and that's assuming there is no price drop by November! Now this Xmas, Average Joe Mom is going to see a $550 PS3 on the shelf next to a potentially $350-$375 X360...hmm, no brainer for Average Joe Mom!
Obviously Sony is trying to push the Blu-Ray format by banking that the "Playstation" brand has a slavishly loyal following that will spend 50% more (or can nag their overindulging parents into spending that money) just to get a PS3 instead of an X360. And if that were to happen, then Blu-Ray players would be in a majority of homes before HD-DVD ever gets any traction, so Sony would premptively win the format wars. Nice idea...until you remember that VHS beat the pants out of Beta precisely because it was significantly cheaper, despite being the inferior format. In general, people are more sensitive to price than brand loyalty; and Sony is at great risk of sacrificing the entire Playstation brand in an effort to push their optical disc format. Shame on you Sony, you've clearly lost your mind.
