First Build (Gaming)

Thread Starter
Hey guys hows it going? So I am doing my first build ever, and it is going to be a gaming build to an extent. I have a $3,000 budget and I believe the build I have here comes pretty close to that. Please lemme know if you would change anything to it and if so what would you change ect. I am also doing slight modding to it, getting 5 red LED fans for it, about 50$ total so no biggy.

Project Deceit
Case: Thermaltake Armor+
CPU: Intel i7-960 (Will OC to 4; 4.2 hopefully)
Motherboard: Gigabyte ud7
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce gtx 480
PSU: Antec CP-850
Memory: Crucial Bellatix 6gx(3 x2) 2000ghz
HDD: Seagate Barricude 1.5TB 7200 rpm
SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 120gb
Cooler: Thermaltake Frio
Fan Controller: Lamptron FC6
Peripheals: Razer Imperator, Megalodon, Megamosa, Saitek Cyborg

Any advice will be appreciated! Starting to order when sales hit in December.

Thanks!

I always recommend not getting anything above a i7 920/930. Unless you'll be doing some LN2 overclocking, a 920/930 will hit 4ghz just fine for a far lesser price.

Yeah but if I get the 960 which is based at a higher ghz, will be easier to overclock wont it? This will also be my first overclock. I am currently running a dell at about 2 ghz cpu, so I suppose anything would be better for me in this situation

Agreed, go for a cheaper i7 (I tihnk the 950's got a price reduction though, check em out).

Go for a mechanical keyboard or any generic keyboard/mouse (find one that's comfortable), Razer is overpriced. AMD is dropping their new 6000 series out this year I think, might wanna wait and see what goes on there.

And there is no difference in OC-ability from what I've seen, except in the case of the extreme editions with the unlocked multiplier (the $1,000 ones)

Not at all. If anything it will probably overclock worse. Sure, it starts higher, but it probably cant go as high because its stock voltage. The i7 920/30 is a proven overclocker. would you rather spend $400+ on a cpu that can get you to 4ghz or under 300 for the same?

I will compare the 920, 930, and 950. I figured it wouldnt run the cpu as hard and so would be better but if not then hell thats a couple hundred dollars. The extreme is just crazy, 980x for a gaming rig is rediculous, since most 2d computer games only run up to2 cores as it is.
I will most likely get the peripheals last so they may change but have no effect on the build.

The biggest thing I am worried about is the Cooling, is that cpu cooler a good one? how about the air flow for it, or will I need to look into LCS if I go another gtx 480 in future? Concerned for air flow because I am using the Yate Loons red LED 140mm x5. Being an LED hoping it doesnt effect it too much, and of course the 230mm side panel fan for the gpu will be there. Is airflow enough these days or has time rolled onto liquid cooling?

Air Cooling is fine. Get either the Noctua NH-D12 or the Tuniq Tower Extreme.
every i7 can use air no problem as long as you have a good cooler.
and with that case i wouldnt worry much. you should have good air flow.

Alright so I will change that to a 920/930, reviewing now to see which will be better. What about the Notcua NH-D14? Why the 12 vs the 14? Is it becaues the 14 is massive in size and wouldn't fit?

Does Microcenter have quality products usually? There is one about 10 minutes away from me and I was planning on going there to get parts etc.
