Is this a bad hard drive?
My office computer has given up on me I think.

You didn't have another type of bootable media in one of your drives did you? If not, I'd say your boot sector is probably screwed up. Might be time for a reformat.

The message tels you, that the system can't find a valid bootdrive.
There are 2 main posibilities.

1. Your HD is dead, missing power or orherwite disconnected
2. Your Bios and/or Motherboard has screwed up, and somehow it dosn't detect the drive.

I don't see the likelyhood of software faliure, since it asks for a bootdisc. My best bet is hardware/bios.

Try this step by step to find the error:

1 Try checking the connections
2 check Bios settings
3 Is the disc on a seperat controler, then move the disc to another controler that you know works. (CDROM etc.)

The problem seems to be the controller. When I swith the data cable to the CD ROM terminal everthing boots fine.

On the side It looks like the board is done.

Thanks for your help.

Might be a bad cable, just happened to me the other day on one of my folding rigs.
Also the MBR might be corrupt, you might be able to do a repair.

Yes you can try another cable, but if it works on the other controler, it's most likely the first controler or the port thats fried.

Good luck with it.

Hint: you can get PCI IDE-controlers for almost free!
