Advice on Build

Thread Starter
I'm about dead-set on most of what I'm getting, so what I want to know is about cooling in general. Would I do fine with Air Cooling (or at least for a few months before getting liquid cooling), or would it be best to go for liquid cooling with this setup? I do plan on OC'ing the CPU to +4ghz, but that's about it.

IMO, that case is way too expensive for what it offers. CPU is useless since a $200 i7 930 will OC to 4.0GHZ+. Ram could be exchanged for some Corsair Dominators at 1600MHz instead of 1333MHz or some Mushkins for better performance. PSU os meh, I'm not a fan of Thermaltake PSUs. Go with an Antec TPQ or a Corsair HX/AX series.

Also, that Killer Xeno is useless. On board lan is way more than u need.

P.S: instead of paying for a killer Xeno, do ur ears a favor and get a decent sound card. Asus Xonar DX will do wonders compared to onboard.
P.S.2: Lose the Veloci-raptors and get an SSD for a boot drive.

About the CPU, I don't want to OC it much in the beginning. So I'm sticking with the 960, I only see the Corsair Dominators in [x2] packs, and Thermaltake has done me well before.

I can understand that. But it's a Miscellaneous item, meaning I may not get it immediately.

I've looked into sound cards, as audio works fine on a cheap motherboard, I don't see why it wouldn't follow for a better motherboard.

No can do. I looked into the SSD and by now, I'm absolutely 100% uncomfortable with their failure rates that people have told me about.

I mainly just want information on the cooling methods. (Maybe I posted in the wrong forum?)

The price/performance difference between a 930 and a 960 at stock speeds is just a waste tbh. Since u can even OC a 930 to 3.5-3.6 GHZ on stock cooling, that 960 really is unnecessary. I wish more people would chime in for u to see that it really isn't a good idea to follow through with some components u have up there.

In the end, it IS your money and you will be using the PC.

Personally, for $4.5K I would build a much more capable PC instead of some items u have on there.

BTW, did u research these components first or did u go on Newegg.com and search for the top rated/most expensive things like I did 1.5 years ago?

P.S: I hope this doesnt come across the wrong way but, try not to have your mind set on things when u ask for advice, sometimes other people's experience and advice will let you relaize something you might have overlooked or haven't considered.

Ehh, while your link was broke I noticed what you linked. What I mean is whether air cooling is plenty for SLI GTX480.

Like I said, I don't want to OC it much in the beginning since I'm uncomfortable with OCing. Hence why I want to go for something that clocks at 3.2ghz natively, at least.

I've done the research myself and have asked a lot of people. Admittedly, you are the only person that's suggested buying Solid-State Drives (absolutely everyone I know either themselves or people they work with report that SSD's failure rate is too high), an additional Sound Card (I've never once heard of anyone having problems with on-board sound; what I have heard is that ONLY audio-enthusiasts should invest in another sound card), and as well the only person I've communicated with to go against ThermalTake (my own experience is that Thermaltake has done quite well).

I was asking for advice per cooling methods mainly. If I was posting in the wrong forum, again, I accept my mistake. Anyways, I'll look more into the Dominator series.

Level 10 - Waste of money, do not buy. Buy a CM or Lian Li, or something good like those
i7 960 - waste of money, buy a 930 and OC it. No point in wasting money when you can OC.
HDs - Get Samsung F3 1TB drives and an SSD. The F3 is faster and much much less expensive and just as good of a drive. Dont say Sata3, that HD wont even use it, if you have an HD, Sata2 is plenty, SSDs can occasionally utilize Sata3, but not all of them.
G13 - usesless, do not buy
V8 - Get a better cooler, or go water
OCZ NIA - do not buy, its not worth it yet, the tech just isnt there

Needless to say you can do much much better for the money than what you have up there. If you would like build suggestions just ask, and OCN will help

Looks like a good build, if this is what is a good build in your mind, then get it and enjoy it. Although, I must say F3 1 TB drives are amazing as the previous poster said, and sadly, the v8 is a complete waste of money. Go with the v6 at least, as it will cool significantly better than the v8 and most likely better than the v10.

NameUnknown - Uh, I had no plans on getting the Level 10.

I'll go with a couple Samsung F3's as suggested, but like I said, SSD's are out of the question for me. I can understand the OCZ being useless, but I can see myself using the G13; so while I won't have it in, I'll plan to get the G13 later (likewise for the NIC, I'll not buy it initially).
